Quinn Hughes comp to Karlsson

Created by: Tbrew
Team: 2022-23 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 18, 2022
Published: Dec. 18, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Comp is Karlsson with a slight overpay. Hughes would probably be one of the best defensemen traded since then, though probably not as good as Karlsson it’s known he would require an overpay which is why I’m using Karlsson as the comp in the first place.

I am not saying either team should do this, I am just making a comp to Karlsson and seeing how Quinn might slot into the NJ lineup

Tierney—> Boqvist or McLeod
Balcers—>Foote
Norris—> Holtz
Demelo—> Smith. Maybe Graves, but I chose the vet defensive D with term instead
Unprotected 1st—>2023 1st
Other picks—->2025 1st

To clarify, my opinion is Quinn is less valuable than Karlsson was in his prime, and the Karlsson comp is an adequate overpay comparable, since we know he needs an overpay to be moved. My main issue with the comp is that Ottawa was gearing towards a rebuild, while Vancouver for some reason refuses to accept they need to rebuild. I tried to cover with that by putting in mostly NHL ready players, but out may mean a difference of including a Yeezy or Sevo instead of another pick and prospect.

Now go have fun in the comments

If a Hughes trade accures, Nemec WILL be appart of that trade.

Elliotte Friedman said the only untuchable for the Canuck was Pettersson, but it would take a MAMMOth offer fot the 'nucks to move Quinn Hughes

I’d assume it’s either Nemec or Holtz. I chose Holtz because he is NHL ready, and the comp was Josh Norris.
This is a mammoth trade for Quinn imo. Quinn is not a generational defender, and the comp I used was for a generational talent. Unless Cych gets moved, that probably changes things with his asking price expected to be high. That would make the Karlsson deal pretty outdated to use, but rn it’s all we’ve got

I think the comp is fair but I agree that the Canucks probably target Nemec over Holtz if they were doing this.

I also needed to chime in, as the foremost champion of uniting NHL brothers, I truly appreciate that not only do we get Quinn matched up with Jack, but you also had the foresight to pair up the Stillman boys as well.

i think nemec + unprotected 23 first is the starting point. i could see another smaller piece in that deal but the canucks would def want nemec over holtz

That’s fair! I went with the guy who could contribute in Holtz, to try and keep the retool spirit in Vancouver, but Nemec is fine too!

yeah i think if they didn’t have such an obvious need on D i could see them wanting the more NHL ready player, but if they’re trading hughes they really need to get a D prospect in return because that D is tragic without him

Karlson is not a good comparable. Quinn Hughes is 22 years old and likely hasn’t even entered his prime.

Quinn being 23 is probably peaking in the next year or so. That being said, the comp to Karlsson ultimately doesn’t work in his favor anyway, which is why I’m using it as an overpay. Points wise it’s similar I think, but Hughes lacks the on ice impacts that Karlsson brought, and Karlsson also is more of a premium by nature since he’s a righty. Karlsson was a generational talent who was playing like one at the time of his trade, in all facets. Quinn in his prime is likely not going to make it there in the next year when he peaks

There really just isn’t a very comp for Quinn Hughes though.

I'd change one of Boqvist, Smith, Foote or Stillman to Shakir another RHD if they cant get Nemec

its a good trade comp, but legitimately makes me angry seeing people compare the play of hughes to in his prime erik karlsson. at the time he was moved he was the most dominant defenseman since lidstrom. hughes doesn't even come close

I respect your work using a comparable trade, but the only way Vancouver part ways with Hughes is if they receive an offer that answer thwir needs at C and RHD. Nemec+

How many players actually peak at 23? It would be incredibly sad if anybody's best season was at age 23...

I said he would peak in a year or so, not at 23
I think it was EH twins did a study of the aging curve, and how a peak falls within 24-25

I agree. I tried to make it clear that I think this is an overpayment for Quinn Hughes, since that’s what it would take to pry him from Vancouver
