Elite??? Nah. He's a decent 2nd pairing RD with some annoying flaws.

Tyson has been the best defenceman on this team so far this season.

Lots of weirdness going on with how some Devils fans perceive Severson.
In truth he's #3 guy that has been miscast as a #2 for far too long on multiple bad Devils teams, him getting scratched last night out made that section of the fandom chirp up again.
Given the returns Chiarot and Savard got at recent deadlines your suggested trade is certainly within reasons, though on the higher end of outcomes in a Severson trade.
I don't think it's very likely Severson's traded however, he's playing a very important role on this Devils team and moving him out would create a large hole in their defence.

The Ducks would be stupid not to take that offer considering they got him from the Wild for nothing...

Severson made a bad play a couple of games ago (turnover at blueline) that lead to an odd-man rush and a goal against. It stunk. But the bigger picture is that there is a group of Devils fans that have hated Severson, Hischier, and a couple of others….and they can be quite noisy on social media. So any time one of those guys does anything wrong, it seems to get amplified.

Severson has been prone to the occasional WTF mistake ever since he arrived in NHL. His own goal vs San Jose, his 2-on-1 defending against the leafs, the turnover the other night. But those events = trees. The rest of his resume = forest. He has been one of the better puck movers in last few years, especially d-zone exits and passing through neutral zone. He has played well defensively 5v5, especially when paired with a partner whose strength is d-zone denial (ie, Siegenthaler, Greene). He does well in possession style system (specifically getting pucks out of zone and onto puck carriers sticks). And he can run PP if needed (as we saw last year with Dougie out).

Also, useful to note his usage has changed a lot with a healthy Hamilton and Marino in lineup. Fewer PP minutes and less offensive opportunities. But his GF/60 rates haven’t really slipped.

We’d be lucky if he returned a package like Bourgault/1st. He probably gets a good prospect or late 1st if we moved him though. RD market can get a little frothy at times, so maybe a bit more.

Counting Nemec and Shakir Severson may be NJs 5th best RHD. Don't think Shakir will come to the NHL this year. Nemec might. Get something for Severson before he walks for nothing? Or don't mess with the team?

The Ty Smith for John Marino swap looks brilliant right now.

Its been confirmed that Mukhamadullin is coming to North America this season. TBD if he stays in AHL or gets chance with NHL club.
Reilly Walsh probably gets a shot before Nemec (who would only get 9 games anyway).
Luke Hughes played RD all last year and is playing there for U20 national team for WJC.
Bahl has also played RD in juniors, in AHL, in practice recently with NJD (and in last game).
And longshot is Case McCarthy, a four-year senior at BU who may get dangled a few games as incentive to sign.

There should be options should we need

McCarthy is way out of place on that list. He's a nothing prospect who, if left unsigned, wouldn't lose anyone any sleep.

I disagree. Defensive dman. People look at point totals too much.

Point totals are directly correlated with NHL success, even in defensive defensemen. Most players who take a defensive role at the NHL level produce well in their developmental leagues. If you're looking for a good defensive defensemen in the Devils' prospect pool, the horse to back is Topias Vilén.

my spicy hot take is that his turnover wasn't even a bad play as opposed to being like, half a second too late to execute a good play lmao

So is Sevo good at in-zone Defense? Cause he would work well next to a guy like Nurse who is good at Rush defense but sucks at breakout passes and In-Zone defense

Severson has holes at times on rush defense (he will sometimes put himself in bad position, then recover with a quick poke check). He is not a huge shot-blocker like Larsson but is good with the stick inside the d-zone. Can be physical at times, but not really his thing.

His strengths are d-zone exit (especially via pass) and puck protection. But the latter can be a double edge sword at times. He is a very strong skater (powerful and good edges) so he tends to hold onto the puck a little long sometimes, which is usually what leads to his mistakes/turnovers.

Wasn’t terrible. 9 times out of 10, he recovers. But he can play with fire on blueline at times (Dougie does sometimes too).

Mostly because we're idiots!
He made a bad pass to lose us the philly game. Coach is pissed (rightly so). He seems to have those mishaps on some big stages, last year in Toronto 2x. Our D has sucked as whole during this losing streak, but Severson is the one they want.
Problem is, moving him means another #3RD needs to be put in. Its not coming from an internal move, only players who can fit are left-handed which could be fine I guess. My concern is that they move him and don't find the chemistry and fall apart in the playoffs. I am all for getting something for a player who is on his way to UFA, But Severson might just be the 1 internal move we just eat. The return pkg has to help now and not be futures. And while I dont doubt our GM Fitz, its a tough ask. He's been our whipping boy and was made more prominent. We will cry when his replacement doesn't work we have become a big bunch of the fans of other teams I cringe at tbh.

Kind of where all of us Devs fans should be.

He was a a 1 guy before becoming a 2 guy. he's no where as bad as he's made out to be. 25th D man in scoring last year. Has unfortunately been here for all the bad years, kinda sucks as we're turning the corner he's walking.
