Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 20, 2022
Published: Dec. 20, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If Detroit is out of the playoff picture and they have not extended Larkin.

Leafs need a guy who can play in their top 6 LW spot but who can also play centre in case Matthews or Tavares go down.

Horvat + O'Reilly are the most probable targets, but perhaps Larkin in this scenario? Boone Jenner would be my number one long term option for that. I would be willing to pay a lot for him.

Thoughts on this trade based on the circumstances I listed?

Wings if they trade Larkin could do much better with retention then a prospect who has proved nothing and a low 1st round pick

laugh First off Larkin isn't getting traded.

Secondly that doesn't even get you a signed Dylan Larkin autograph. shakes head

Robertson is only 21 years old. He has proven quite a bit so far. There are a lot of highly touted prospects out there that are his age or older. His numbers in the AHL have been impressive. Hasn't had much NHL Opportunity yet and he has been injury prone so far. The prospect could be Minten or Niemela also. I have those 3 in the similar level of prospect.

If he isn't extended by the deadline and Detroit is out the playoff picture? They should do everything they can to sign him. And if they don't they need to trade him. They can't let him walk for nothing.

Maybe a team outbids this but they should move him, if he doesn't sign.

First, Larkin has trade protection. Larkin rental will take a large ransom. You are talking about one of the top 10 two way centers who average above .5ppg. There is no team in the league with Larkin outside the top 6, even if they move him to wing. Look at the Giroux trade last year, and add to it.

I don't agree with it, but Yzerman was willing to let Stamkos walk for nothing, And unfortunately he'll do the same with Larkin. The only problem is Larkin won't come back to Detroit like Stamkos did with Tampa.

I'm not sure on this. Michigan is one of the best places to live in the world and Larkin was born near Detroit. He has family entrenched in Michigan, including his wife to be.
Hell, his dad coached my sister's high school soccer team. We are talking about 1 million apart, I think, but if Larkin concedes on that and takes a little less, he gives a bit of extra cap for the future to win...and local hockey boy in Michigan is a cash cow for years after retirement. Is 8 million over the next 8 years worth...I dunno...10 million after retirement?

Larkin won’t be traded for that package, if he’s traded at all.

The only way I’d be OK with moving him for such a tiny return is if there is collusion involved and he returns in the offseason.

This is a joke, right? This is equivalent to what the Wings got for Tatar...without retention. Give me a break. And Robertson is not a great prospect. Watching you and other Leafs fans try to pump him up on here has been amusing but just stop.

Detroit doesn't feel inclined to make up for Larry Murphy.

That was a great deal by Holland. Fair at the time...Tatar didn't live up to his billing. Tatar was not a rental, he had term.

The Tatar deal was not as lopsided as it appears. I'm not saying Larkin shouldn't go for more, because this Leafs proposal is pretty terrible, but the Tatar deal is an anomaly and is not really fair to consider. Tatar was a 25 to 30 goal scorer (potential), had a ton of skill, a very good cap hit, and term. If Tatar even remotely lived up to his potential in Vegas, Detroit comes out losers in that trade, as Veleno is a 4th liner. At the time, Tatar had some excellent value. Larkin is surely a better player, and a 1C/2C, but he is a pure rental.

Giroux to Florida is a better comparable, I think.

Sorry but the Giroux trade might be a good starting point but it is not a comparable for the simple fact that he's 8 years older than Larkin. I don't think the Tatar trade was lopsided but I also don't think you can judge it by what Wright and Holland (mostly Holland) drafted with those picks. Also that draft has turned out to be slightly horrible overall. I think we were lucky to walk away with Berggren.

Giroux is also more accomplished with finals in his past. Larkin is the better player today for sure, but not by a ton. Plus, payment for rentals eventually kind of tops out. You don't usually see multiple 1sts and high prospects going tbe other way for a rental. Erik Karlsson is probably the ceiling, and that was for the best defenseman in the league. That deal was a cautionary tale for paying for rentals.
