For Wagner to the sharks. In the past 1.25-1.5 mil retention (and Wagner is 100% cap dump here) usually carries a 4th, 5th might not be enough to make it happen.

Boston is not going after Kane. And that trade is horrible.

A 27 year old Kane with term gets a return like that. A 34 year old rental with full control over where he goes limiting Chi abilty to negotiate better deal gets half that.

Also terrible fit for Boston.

A 4th to save $225k in cap space? Seems like bad asset management to me

kind of agree but it would take a 4th for a team to take on a 1.35 mil contract that is a pure cap dump.

Except it isn’t. Buried it’s 225k. And it’s prorated so at the deadline it’s less than a used car. Lol.

buried or not the sharks have to pay it and 1.35 mil for a 5th isn't smart. in the past when 3rd party teams retained 1.35 mil in contracts it was for a 4th.
we don't care that he is buried.

Lol. You are not paying 1.35 that was the point.

Being buried does matter.

You clearly don’t understand how cap works.

It’s a bad trade for Boston. You get a 5th for free. 🙄. You leave Wagner in the AHL for rest of the season it would cost you roughly 33k of cap space this year. Oh the horror. Lol

As a Hawks fan, I don't think BOS should be targeting Kaner. I'm not sure Kaner would waive for BOS either. I don't have any inside sources, but it just doesn't seem like a good fit. Kaner doesn't have to play the #1 RW because he's played on the 2nd line away from Toews his entire career, but he's going to ask what PP unit he'll be on for sure AND what role he'd play on that unit. I'm not sure what BOS response would be. What do BOS fans think about Kaner leading your #1 PP unit?

Los Angeles doesn't need a late-developing bottom-pairing defenseman. Plus there's some bad karma there.

sharks would still have to pay his salary for nothing. it may only be 225K in cap loss but its till the pro-rated portion of a 1.35 mil contract we would have to pay.
it isn't free its cost a lot of money for a late pick and would not be financially smart to give up that much money unless it was for a decent pick (4th or higher)

His real money owes to start the year was $1 million. For simplicity let's say half will have been paid already this year by the TDL. It would be $225k cap hit and $500k in actual money owed. That's peanuts in the NHL.

its still 500k out of the sharks owners pocket for a 5th round draft pick. and its losing a pick for 225K of cap savings for Boston, neither side of the deal makes much sense.

And at the deadline it’s more like 85% has been paid. Leaving about 150k in salary. Absolutely nothing.

And Boston is not saving 225k. That’s his cap hit for a full season. They would be saving about 30 days worth. Around 30-35k. So even worse.

Why is someone complaining about taking on Wagner less than 2 mil on an expiring deal. Grier takes that for a 5th all day. Hell we'll even put him on the 2nd line and bolster our chances at a higher 1st rounder. We'll even take Craig Smith for a 3rd. No reason SJ can't eat some turds for extra draft ammunition

Carolina essentially paid $4.25 million for a 1st round pick when they took on Marleau a few years back.
