Bertuzzi

Created by: leafs101
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 23, 2022
Published: Dec. 23, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Knies would be the next man up due to injury or poor play. And there's always at least one injury, I'm sure he'd be getting games. Could also rotate in with someone like ZAR if that's not the case though I'd be surprised.

With Holmberg playing so well, I think we're pretty set at center now. And Bertuzzi would be the best winger I can think of to play with JT and Marner. Perfect combo of bite and skill to mesh well with them.

Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Bertuzzi, Tyler ($2,375,000 retained)
  2. 2023 4th round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
Assuming good healthy stretch of play before TDL, re-signing gets complicated or undesired by a party for some reason, etc...

How is this as a base of a deal? I won't get it perfect but think its a solid place to start conversations on both sides, wanted to see what TOR and DET fans think.
DET
  1. Robertson, Nicholas
  2. 2023 1st round pick (TOR)
  3. 2023 6th round pick (TOR)
2.
TOR
  1. Schenn, Luke
Additional Details:
We don't necessarily need him, and if all healthy he's not cracking the game 1 lineup, but as we've learned you can never have too many D and odds are we won't be healthy.

Also can step in and provide a physical element should in the first game or two, it becomes apparent that that type of presence is needed.

For a 3rd rounder, don't want to leave anything to chance with such a high end team this year.

The one thing im very concerned of with Bertuzzi is the injury history

He had wrist surgery this year along with a UBI and 2 years ago back surgery

Its a bit to risky for my liking

ROR or Horvat are better targets. Especially since this isn't really much cheaper and both players are way better than Bertuzzi.

Horvat's price is gonna be bananas. Especially since someone will def drive the price up for a sign and trade. ROR yea there's a decent argument, but im not sure that we have a real need at C with Holmberg and Kampf. I suppose Jarnkrok would do fine at 2LW but depth scoring and bite would be something that Bertuzzi would provide very well for the 2nd line.

100% a good argument. But, if healthy, would be an incredible fit on that line. Suppose it'd depend very much on how he returns from this injury, but I mean we'd only have him for a few months so maybe the injury thing isn't as prominent as if we were taking him on long term?

Definitely a good point and one I'm on the fence with as well.

Robertson has not much value to Wings as they have many LWer's. Wings need RWers or good RH centers.

Low 1st round pick and a winger not needed are not getting Bert with retention. Also many think Bert is gone, but until he is traded or signed somewhere, I will not count Stevie out.

I like Holmberg as well but he can also move to the wing and having Kampf and ROR in the bottom 6 gives us 2 legit shutdown lines. Two absolutely dominant offensive lines and 2 high end shutdown lines would make TO impossible to defend against.

I’d do it if the price was lower; I don’t think bertuzzi is particularly high skill so if we’re just looking for someone with bite & decent hands to play with JT & Marner (which makes sense) , we can get similar player at lower price.

I think his healthy, the only logical argument against this trade for the Leafs, is the same reason why the wings would look to do this. You're getting a decent prospect and a 2023 first, but you also don't commit long term to somebody who seems to be more prone to injury and plays a hard style of hockey. For the Leafs, you might say the probability of injury in the short term TDL+playoffs might not be all that bad and you take the risk on someone who might be the best possible fit.

he's pretty darn skilled. Really great hands, plays hard, scored 30 goals and 62 points on detroit in 68 games last year. Not sure what similar player is out there; someone who can play 2LW sure, but not in a similar style

It really depends on what kind of money Bertuzzi is asking for. Good player on a good contract > this offer.

nope. thats where the line is drawn. as good as he is, still an injury risk. Knies is untouchable barring a crazy offer, and after that its either Niemela or 2023 first, not both. We'll go after someone else if that's where the price is.

Canucks turned down a second round pick for Schenn last year. I don't see his value being lower this year. They could probably get more than a third.

Detroit declines. Nothing is going to be attached to Bertuzzi, unless a team over pays for him. A small prospect/player who in a smaller sample size has worse injury concerns is an underpay. The first is nice albeit 25-30 overall, and the 6th is irrelevant.

Due to Toronto being within the same division, not to mention the last several season-series records, SY is not going to equip the Leafs with a top 6 forward while attaching retention for such little return.

Bertuzzi’s value is near as low as it’s ever been due to injuries and the fact that they are trading him to get SOME value because they know he will walk. I think a 1st and Robertson is too much.

He plays an aggressive physical game, which is why he is coveted.
The back injury is resolved, and he came back scoring 30 goals.
He hurt his wrists twice blocking shots. From a "injury magnet" stance, that is cause for concern. From a "will his injuries limit him?" stance, the answer is no.

Bertuzzi has some seriously good hands. He has undressed some goalies with sick moves. You don't get to see the hands as often because it is not his role when he plays with Larkin and Raymond; Raymond was the skill role, Larkin was the puck carrier, and Bertuzzi was the havoc net front and corners guy. When he played with Suter and Fabbri, you saw his hand skill much more because Suter and Fabbri relied more on Bertuzzi to be the guy to drive the play. Side note, Bertuzzi is much more effective in the 1st role because it allows his linemates to be better. I'd 100% rather have Larkin driving the play, and he can do so much more effectively with Bertuzzi on his wing.

Dude , he hurt his hand blocking shots. That could happen to anyone, it doesn't count as an injury history. He plays an aggressive game and has a very low injury history , especially based on his style of play!

Bert plays a similar game to the tkacucks. He's a poor man's Matthew tkachuck, Wich is very valuable.
