Roster Evaluation

Created by: ricochetii
Team: 2022-23 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 26, 2022
Published: Dec. 26, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Players remaining on the roster aren't moving for the foreseeable future unless they play themselves out of a roster spot. These should be part of our core long term if they even partially reach their potential.

Scratches we aren't looking to move but are replaceable if a good enough offer is made.

Everyone else in the prospect pool will have every opportunity to establish themselves as part of the team, but are potentially available if their progress doesn't meet our timeline before other options present themselves.

Cap is not an issue and we'll probably be in a position to take on cap from other teams for at least a couple more years, barring any splurges in free agency. Some individual players are ahead of progress, but as a team there are still holes and roles that need to be filled and as an organization we still need to stock some high end talent potential.
Trades
1.
MTL
Expiring contracts with no trade value.
    2.
    MTL
Little to no trade value until final year of their contracts, but serviceable vets in the meantime.
      3.
      MTL
      1. 2023 3rd round pick (NJD)
      Additional Details:
Team doesn't matter. Looking for a 3rd or better.
Re-signing is an option at short term and lower salary as well.
      PIT
      1. Monahan, Sean ($3,187,500 retained)
      4.
      MTL
      1. Bourgault, Xavier
      Additional Details:
Will be traded either this year or next (retained) for at least a 2nd+.
It could be to another team for a similar prospect this year, due to not being a pure rental and if retention is used.
If retention isn't used, the return will be similar but include an unwanted player to offset the cap.
      EDM
      1. Edmundson, Joel ($1,750,000 retained)
      5.
      MTL
Either could potentially be available, but there's no need to move them unless the offer is substantial. Both are useful players to fill out the roster with desirable tools and their contracts aren't prohibitive to Montreal regardless of what anyone thinks about their production.
        6.
        MTL
Allen could be available, but he signed on as part of the rebuild to stabilize the goaltending situation and isn't someone we're looking to give away or replace from the outside.
          7.
          MTL
Gallagher could be moved anywhere he might get a chance to compete as long as it doesn't handicap us long term.
Another vet it doesn't hurt to keep around for another couple of years in a reduced role, until his salary becomes an issue.
            8.
            MTL
Not likely to move his contract unless it becomes an issue near the end. He has a NMC and will likely retire as a Hab.
              9.
              MTL
Players we may be open to moving, if not now, then in a year or two.
                ARI
                1. Harris, Jordan
                2. Matheson, Michael
                3. Pezzetta, Michael
                4. Savard, David
                5. Wideman, Chris
                6. Xhekaj, Arber
                Additional Details:
Pezzetta and Wideman are easily replaceable.
Harris and/or Xhekaj could be victims of too much LHD depth.
Matheson and Savard will eventually be replaced with rising prospects or better free agent/trade options.

Xhekaj is here long term as well. There is no need to move him and he fills the perfect 3rd pairing role and instead playing above his head in a 2nd pairing role either. Other than that and some of the returns, pretty accurate analysis. IMO Eddy will get a similar return as Chiarot and Monahan similar to Pageau.

Might as well trade him for Dubois since he's leaving Winnipeg as soon as he can.

Xhekaj's staying power depends on his ability to remain disciplined and not take fights just because they are available while continuing to improve his play.
You simply can't be more than a 7th D if you are regularly spending 5+ minutes in the box and take unnecessary risks of injury.
I do hope for the best but you only typically get a few good years out of that type of player and they may not be the right years for us.
Only one of Xhekaj or Harris *might* move. It depends on the development of partners and chemistry for the one that remains. Harris has a head start with Kovacevic but Xhekaj has stronger and more specialized attributes.

Good riddance, as long as he plays hard while he is in Winnipeg, I don’t give a ****. Maybe he can teach Evans to keep his head up before he leaves

Xhekaj is nothing more than a grinder/tough guy. Can hit and fight and is fun to watch, but is really not that effective outside of that.

Not quite. 10 points and a positive goal differential is pretty good for a 3rd pairing "enforcer". He can have an impact if he can incorporate his strength and aggressiveness into his positional and puck play.

Might be some interest in Laroque, but probably not enough to move Evans without a pick added.

I agree but I think Harris will be moved since Guhle and Hutson are our most likely long-term top 4 LHD and having Harris as the 3 LHD doesn't make sense long-term so Xhekaj stays there. Also Kovacevic is a RHD not LHD so he can rema8n as our 3 RHD or 7th D.
