Leafs TDL

Created by: Younginthe6
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 27, 2022
Published: Dec. 27, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Leafs glaring issue is the 2LW spot. There are some intriguing trade candidates out there, but to me, they need a pure winger over the likes of Horvat and O-Reilly. Kampf and Holmberg have flourished in their bottom 6 centre roles, so there is no need to replace either of them. To me, there is one trade candidate that stands out more than anyone - Timo Meier. Not only is he exactly what the team needs right now, but he is also an RFA to be sold at the draft. It's an obvious choice to me.

Trades
TOR
  1. Meier, Timo ($3,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
SJS gets a serviceable forward for the rest of the year. They get two of the Leafs better young prospects, one of which is a right-handed defenceman, and three picks. The 2024 2nd can be what buys the 50% retention, which SJS can afford
SJS
  1. Kerfoot, Alexander
  2. Niemelä, Topi
  3. Robertson, Nicholas
  4. 2023 1st round pick (TOR)
  5. 2023 3rd round pick (OTT)
  6. 2024 2nd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Timo will be expensive. He's one of the best players available, and being an RFA adds extra value. The Leafs need to be prepared to spend prospects and picks.

The glaring need is more offence from the bottom 6. The top 6 is close to a point a game and Jarnkrock has looked good with Marner and JT. Getting ROR to be elite Defensively and add offence vs lesser players is a perfect fit.

I definitely agree, scoring depth is and has been an issue in the past - but I think it is largely an intentionally plan by Leafs management to have 2 scoring lines that are very hard to defend and 2 lines that are very responsible defensively and can shut down any opponent. Bringing Knies into the bottom 6 should add some scoring flair even as an unexperienced guy, and Jarnkrok is capable of chipping in some offense as well. I just think if the Leafs are going to make a big splash, it would be better to be a more impactful position than 3C.

Why do people think Holmberg is 3C over Kampf? Kampf, easily the leafs best shutdown center.

Kampf sticks with Engvall, end of story. Those two are most effective when they're together. Their identity is a shut down unit, so it just makes more sense to have ZAR with them and Knies with Jarkrok. 3rd line vs 4th line doesn't really matter, it comes down to deployment.
