Canes consider it if it comes with 50% retention and ability to negotiate extension ahead of time. That last part probably becomes the stumbling block as Canes likely won’t go over 7 or 7.5 for Horvat

Canes don’t need Horvat apparently. They’re already too good and wouldn’t give up anything for him according to their fans

If he came with an extension, I could see it. But I don't think you'd be looking at Trikizov with this kind of package. Probably Drury or Gunler as opposed to the 18 year old the Canes drafted 6 months ago.

Also, "Canes become top contender"? What? They sit 2nd in the entire NHL, 7 points back of the Boston Bruins who have developed an allergy to losing. They're already a contender. They're going to get Pacioretty back (who still hasn't played a game for them). They're going to get Freddie back who has been out for about 2 months. They're going to get Kase back and he has 20 goal upside to add to the lineup. Horvat doesn't magically make Carolina a cup contender, they already are one. Horvat just makes this team SCARILY deep.

Personally wouldn’t move Gleb with how high his potential is, but Drury or Gunler sure. The biggest thing would be getting an extension worked out beforehand, and since the Canes are unlikely to consider anything beyond 7-7.5mil, this deal likely would come falling apart. If Horvat is willing to take a deal in that aforementioned range to play for a contender, maybe. Another big problem is that Horvat wouldn’t be the greatest fit for the Canes system.

Canes are better off keeping their assets and letting Necas run rampant at 2C, and if they so chose, sign Horvat in UFA. Kuzmenko on the other hand, would probably be a better target for the Canes.

There was a time when Garland was in ARI that I really wanted the Leafs to go after him. Now, not so much, at least not at that price. If we're trading Niemela, we are going after a bigger fish than Garland.

we arent big rental players and dont pay guys big, big money until they are 35. it has little to do with being too good for Horvat.
