If Karlsson can carry his current game over to BUF that would be amazing...

The potential for a cliff fall at 9M coupled with this would almost assuredly make Buff lose one of: Power, Quinn, Peterka, Cozens on top of that package makes me say no way.

I don’t agree for a couple reasons:

Him and skinner have 5 years left.

But :

The cap is gonna jump to 95 mill ish with 3-4 years
Guys like Savoie will still be on an ELC in 4 years .
Guys that expire in 2 years can still be bridged till those contracts expire.

Seems insane to me to trade away a guy named Zemgus but people have some crazy ideas I'll never understand.

If Karlsson was any good on D then maybe. He wouldn't be paired with Dahlin though

Definitely interesting, Dahlin seems to play better on the Right. Don't know if I would take Samuelsson away from him. Samuelsson is the Glue back there and the numbers prove it.

Seems like it would be redundant for BUF as it was with Burns and Karlsson being on the same team.

The team would play even faster than they do now, and you're right it'd be a blast to watch. But I feel like after this season it just doesnt make sense, we'd have $30m in 3 defensemen soon (dahlin will get $11ish and power they should sign long term for 9-10ish I imagine). Interesting thought though, his contract is just so long. And San Jose wont pay $12.5m in retention

The thing is you get guys like Kulich and Savoie in your top 9 on elcs for 2-4 years and then bridge them. And pay them after those big contracts expire. You can’t give longterm to everyone imo. That’s how you open a longer window when you bridge some of the good talent to fit more guys

These AllStar team moves rarely work

Didn’t work for the Sharks with EK
I’d pass

Definitely interesting, Dahlin seems to play better on the Right. Don't know if I would take Samuelsson away from him. Samuelsson is the Glue back there and the numbers prove it.
Let's remember Karlsson has 36 EVP in 37 games, so he is not merely a PP specialist.
It would be interesting setting up the defensive pairings.
Power appears to be a very strong defensive D-man so let's imagine:
Samuelsson-Dahlin
Power-Karlsson
Johnson-Jokiharju
The top 4 could end up playing over 50 minutes with Karlsson taking Power's spot as the 2nd PP defenseman.
Since Erik would be taking Lyubushkin's spot in the line up, the highest scoring team in the NHL would score even more.

His contract could be absorbed, but the bigger issue would be how would Dahlin, Power, and Cozens modify their contract requests?
Thompson may have set the tone for future contracts.
He may have taken a team friendly deal. We all need to understand even with higher state taxes the COL in Buffalo is much lower than other NHL cities.
A 4,000 sqft house in Buffalo would cost about the same as a 2,000 sqft house in nearly any other city with nearly equal property taxes.
Last weekend we paid $160 usd for two front row tickets to "Come From Away."
Those tickets in Toronto would be $600 cad or nearly $450 usd, three times the price.
Thompson's contract in Buffalo buys a lot more entertainment in Buffalo than nearly any other NHL city.

While Erik would make Buffalo even more fun to watch, there are good reasons to pass on it.

There’s no promises the cap will jump that much and if it does those guys I mentioned will eat up a lot of it. They showed faith in power by burning a year last year. It would only work if all those guys took mild discounts based upon current trajectory. This doesn’t even take into consideration that UPL (or some other goalie) will be getting paid during that time as well. Gotta show faith in the team and reward them with decent goaltending, either from within or out the org. To me, it’s an improper use of space/assets. I’ll agree could be very entertaining to watch though.
