Take it easy on me, it’s my first post. I’ve only been into hockey for a few years, so my understanding and knowledge of hockey roster management/retention is novice level.

Anyway. Im basing this trade with a contract extension for Meier already agreed. Is this proposal good, bad or plain dumb?

That might work for SJ if they do wind up trading Meier. There are a few issues though.

1. Meier has said he'd prefer to resign with SJ though that might change if they decide to go full rebuild and start trading all their best players away.
2. It'll take a big contract to get Meier to sign long term almost anywhere without checking out offers from other teams as a free agent.
3. As a pending RFA he'd still be under team control for 1 more year but his qualifying offer is 10 mil.

The same goes for any other team looking to acquire him unless he gives a list of teams he'd be willing to extend long term with.

I think NYI only agree to a deal on Meier if he agrees to an extension, which then raises the price to acquire him….so might need to include Wahlstrom?

Just my thoughts…
