While NYR would be fools to not accept this, there is no way to make the cap work for them-- this season or potentially next with the extension Nylander will get

This is a bad trade for both teams. Why? NYR need the cap space next year, Toronto is way better with Nylander going into the playoffs.

That said, looking at swapping these two in isolation just player for player, Nylander has 1 year and half on his contract versus AF who's younger and locked up for the long term...it's not that far off. If these were 2 rebuilding teams on either side, AF would be more valuable.

Like you, we'd rather keep Laf & sign a UFA. Yet we don't have cap. I'd say Laf for Knies & 1st but that 1st is too low, so...

Cap space is king in todays NHL. This gives Tor room to work with and sign another player. I dont think this is a terrible thought to toss it out there.
