Jakub Vrana Trade

Created by: Devsfan25
Team: 2022-23 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 4, 2023
Published: Jan. 4, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Maybe certain teams are not interested in Vrana at full price. A deal like this opens up almost 2m in cap space for DET while the Devils only take on an additional 2m in cap space this year as opposed to the full 5.25m. With a few expiring contracts this offseason, Vrana's 5.25m cap hit wouldn't be a problem next year

Red Wings have plenty of cap space this summer. Cap space isn't an issue.

If the wings don’t have plans for Vrana in the NHL, why would u wanna waste the 4+m he’s getting paid in the AHL. Opens up the door to sign or trade for another player

Vrana is going to be given every chance to get back to speed, or he will be traded for assets/fair value. Not to leverage cap space.

U think he’s gonna fetch fair value? Wtf r u talking about? The other 31 teams could’ve picked him up for free yesterday and now u expect the wings to get valuable assets. Ur daydreaming

How do you know Vrana is done in Detroit? Are you his agent? He's still under contract with the Red Wings for another 1.5 seasons.

Which is better for Detroit? Taking a plug like Johansson in a lowball trade or...

Seeing if Vrana can turn things around, get back in game shape and score at the same rate he was when he was playing?

It's not Steve Yzerman's job to improve the NJ Devils and he's not a complete moron like 99% of CFACGM posters make him out to be.

I think Stevie Y is a great GM. Was in Tampa, has been good in DET. It doesn’t take a genius to realize that the player and organization are not on the same page. Maybe u get a mediocre asset but not getting fair value considering he was free yesterday

what do you think is "fair value" for a guy that has played a grand total of 31 professional games since the beginning of last season and is owed $5.25M through the end of next year?

like, I get he's been good when he's been on the ice but Habs fans could say the same thing about Jonathan Drouin (65 points in his last 127 GP - a solid 40-45 point player! Just don't ask how far back those games stretch!) At some point, availability becomes a concern and for Vrana it's a flag that's redder than the winged wheel itself.

That is irrelevant. What's more important here is Vrana will be given every chance to get back to speed. If he can't, then of course fair value is whatever it is.

But the idea here that Yzerman put a guy like this on waivers with the expectation of losing or possibly losing him for nothing is absurd.

It's an extreme comparison to highlight the fact that Vrana's value is seriously hampered by the fact that he's missed so much time since the beginning of last year in response to OP saying that Vrana could be traded for "fair value". What kind of value are opposing GMs going to put on a $5M+ player who's missed significant time over the past two seasons?

So you don't have any critical thinking skills. YOU have fun with that.

Critical thinking. Ok, lets do that. How do you think Yzerman KNEW that he wouldn't be claimed? Think he did a poll of fellow GMs? Believed what they told him with blind faith? Of course not. The word you are looking for is that he believed he wouldn't be claimed. Belief isn't knowing. He could have been wrong ... and if he was, they'd have lost Vrana for nothing. He was willing to lose him for nothing because he might not have been right in his beliefs. That is critical thinking ... you should try it some time.

are you seriously saying it's irrelevant to ask what you think his "fair value" is when you're the one who brought it into the conversation?

and while I don't think Yzerman put him on waivers *expecting* to lose him, i'm sure he was prepared for the possibility. i'm personally surprised a bottom-feeder with cap space didn't take a swing - feels like he'd be the perfect type of player for an Arizona, let's say, to give top-6 minutes to and eventually flip out for positive assets

Could be a hundred reasons, I'm not Bill Armstrong so I can't tell you why. Maybe he likes the guys that Vrana would displace more? Maybe Vrana making $5.75M against a $5.25M cap hit next year doesn't jibe with what ownership wants? Maybe they think uprooting him from where he's at right now to a brand new organization in a brand new city where he might not know anyone is a risky decision for a player in recovery? Who knows?

My point is that every single team in the league passed on adding Vrana to their roster for nothing - so when you're talking about "fair value" for him, what are you expecting?

Once again, you're focused on the wrong thing.

Fair value is subjective and time-sensitive, who cares. At this point in time Johnsson is not fair value for Vrana. What's your point?

If Detroit was willing to dump Vrana for nothing, hard to imagine he gets much of any return until he plays some games. If anything, would probably be a summer move.
