Yeah, no. He’s doing just fine with LA.

I love Danault, KK is a decade younger, makes less, and is about as good defensively if you want to use the underlyings. This doesn't make much sense for Carolina

I came here thinking there was some insane reason LA would trade Danault. Guess not 😂

Take out KK, the Kings like the trade a lot better.

would love to see the number to compare (i didn't pas much attention to that). No one see the old Pacio-Danault combo ... geez! BTW Danault is way much more complete than KK !

That would be nice but I don’t think LA has any intention on moving Danault

Danult's scoring is better, undeniably. But KK is 10 years younger, he's much cheaper, and that deal isn't going to look nearly as bad as Danault's is at the end of it.

That's a bold statement considering Danault has lived up to his contract from day-1 for the Kings and KK is still in the "well, he'll grow into his contract" type of hope. Danault is also only 29, not 32. His contract brings him to 33, not a 35+ type deal. There's high probability the Kings get very good worth out of the length of Danault's deal. Especially considering the level of play he's shown so far.

Oh KK's worth his deal right now. Saying "he'll grow into it" is bold. It's nothing against Danault, but he's got a history of injuries, he's much older than KK, etc. Danault will always be a good defensive player, but his offense is inconsistent. Would rather sit with KK and have him continue to be what Danault will be with regression and see if there's the offensive upside on a younger player on a cheaper contract. It's nothing against Danault, but it's like saying you're going to rearrange the deck chairs and end up exactly how you started. I don't see the point.

Danault has been perfectly healthy since he joined the team. I'd much rather have Danault than KK. Wouldn't do it even if you added a 1st. Danault has been the Kings single best player since he joined the team (he literally won the team MVP award last season).

Team MVP awards mean very little. Fast won the Rangers MVP award for 7 years straight, I doubt you'd move Danault for Fast.

I get why you say that, but statistically, they are very similar players. Kotkaniemi is one of the strongest players in hockey defensively if you believe the analytics, right up there with Danault. KK's cheaper deal, the fact he's 7 years younger, and they're that similar is why I don't think the Canes would do KK for Danault 1 for 1. Danault is a fine player, but this just doesn't work for either team.

Hence why I said "I wouldn't do it" and not "he's not worth it."

Kotkaniemi is very worth it, this is the issue. There's this illusion that the Kotkaniemi deal is bad. It's actually very similar value to the Danault deal.

Then I suggest both teams keep their respective players and continue to be happy with them.

Meh.... I get KK is a defensive guy, but $4.8mil is a lot to pay a guy who might be on pace for under 30 points in an 82 game season.

And this is coming from someone who has had to defend defensive, shutdown-type players for years, as that was the Kings M.O. for so darn long.

I wouldn't classify KK as worth his deal yet by any means. But hey, thats just my opinion and I don't watch him nearly as much as you likely do.

Kotkaniemi isn't just a defensive player. He's an exceptional play driver. I've had this argument so many times. Kotkaniemi's xG% is a lot more comparable to Jordan Staal than Phil Danault. Staal has had one of the highest in the sport for a decade now, that's not a knock on Danault, but more to serve to how good Kotkaniemi is. At worst, he is a 1.12 million dollar replacement for Jordan Staal. He's worth that deal now, and it could get even better.
