The Habs might do this, but I wonder if the Avs feel their 1st rounder can go a bit further than Monahan..

Yeah I get that, but sources say Monahan will fetch a 1st and the Avs do need a 2C and Monahan has shown in Montreal that he can put up the points and he’s solid defensively. Imagine him on the Avalanche with great talent around him.

As a Calgary resident and Flames fan, I can tell you that when Monahan is at his best, he can certainly put up points, and I don't think he would be bad for the Avs.. but I do feel like he is a bit too fragile. That is why I say the Avs can probably get a slightly "better" player for their 2023 1st.. "better" simply meaning better suited for a playoff run.

I'm rooting for Monahan, I hope he plays the rest of his career healthy, from what I understand, he played hurt for the Flames a great deal, and never complained (maybe the problem haha).. great teammate for sure, someone folks can rally behind in a way, but I still think the Avs will at least try and get something different for their 1st before calling Montreal about Monahan.

I agree, Avs would look for a more impactful C for their first, but up against the deadline they'd do it.

Yep. So, all that said, @JD, this works for us, just only if the other options are gone lol

Monahan won’t return a 1st. With his injury troubles this year and in the past, the value isn’t there.

For a mid round pick, sure. But for a 1st in one of the deepest drafts in recent memory? Absolutely not.

Did you watch any mtl game while Monahan was present ?? He have put a decent 17 pts in 25 game good for a 0.68 ppg ratio and if you try to predict for a full season that gave you around 55 pts. If pts is not enough he was able to be 55% on is faceoff stats during this 25 game échantillon.

Look what happens from the moment he was out of the roster Suzuki have start to struggle because he's missing is second center Monahan.

I also think that a late first would be the return of Monahan but after the Boeser/Horvat/Toews guys are out of the shopping list.

Even when is foot was injured he was able to play and did do great on this match. While I would be happy with a first round pick return, I would also love to see him return next year and sign an good extension for both (team and player) .

You said the games where he was present and that’s exactly the problem. Monahan healthy is a solid player. But he has only been healthy for a handful of games over the past few years. And now he’s been on IR for a few weeks.

Healthy Monahan: sure! You could get a late first from a team that loses out on the higher end Cs on the market (Horvat, Toews, O’Reilly). The problem is that Monahan has not proven he can consistently be that guy.

As an aside, I think a lot of fans will be surprised at how few 2023 1st round picks move this year. There are plenty of other players that would be higher on my wishlist.

I think this is more or less what the deal will end up being.

Monahan is in a bit of a sweet spot.

He will be much cheaper than horvat who they will be trying to sign and trade. 2+ 1st rounders in value + a likely terrible contract.

Toews may be a bit trickier due to the much larger cap hit. Even if landeskog is out till the end of the season it will likely take a double retention to get toews. That historically was a 4th rounder but this year that may be more expensive. Add in the sticker price of "toews" and he will lilely be pricey as well. 1st + likely a good prospect/roster player

Monahan will cost likely just a 1st (unless the market shifts one way or another) so the avs can make out of the deal without losing current depth which they do need for this year.

Yeah and Monahan at 50% retain is only 3.2m which team would be able to fit more into there salary cap. You could offer an good extension also at this summer if you found him adequate for lesser money then the Horvat/Boeser/toews.
