Being competitive again

Created by: JTrades
Team: 2023-24 Anaheim Ducks
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 5, 2023
Published: Jan. 5, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Step 1, trade away expiring contracts and picks.
Step 2, fire Eakins and hire a new coach. I'd go with Andrew Brunette unless someone else gets fired.
Step 3, sign veterans or player you can flip. Keep the term under 4 years.
Step 4, Trade Gibson. It's time. He looks so miserable and isn't playing like the goalie that he once was.
Step 5, trade away players on expiring deals. Silverberg and Henrique. If possible, also Strome and Fowler
I think they are 3 years away from competing for the playoffs.

I'm sure at least some of my trades are way off, just some examples

Thoughts?

I don't think Edmonton is interested in Klingberg.

I'm not sure why you think Ottawa wants to, or has the capability to pay you to take on the far worse contract for a position that we don't need help with.

If Gibson is dealt, you’d imagine it would be for Dostal to take over

I'm going to ignore the fire and carnage going on around it and just say that a 3rd for Kulikov works for the Canes

Gibson LITERALLY had a shutout last night, I was there, I saw it happen in person. Pair that with the stellar game vs Vegas and he is starting to look like his old self again. Yeah, vs Philly was bad, but you are not going to have a great game every night, that's why we have tandems.

That D core is more defensively focused, but is old, slow, and lumbering, they are going to get beat as often as the current D core does.

Only one of the Forwards I would consider is Drouin as a PTO type player, see if getting away from the francophone media takes the pressure off and lets him start to enjoy the game again. You left Lundestrom and Jones on IR and hired two guys we don't need.

This team is genuinely worse than the one we are fielding right now.

That's the idea. Full rebuild. Tear it down before you build it up!

Small market teams like the Ducks don't have the luxury of tanking for years like the Leafs did to get Matthews and company, our teams could financially collapse if that were to happen. We already have Zegras, Drysdale, and Mctavish playing up in the majors, we have Terry and Lundestrom and Comtois as young supporting cast, and we have a couple of Vets that have been around a while in Gibson and Fowler to guide the new team.

Anaheim already has Trevor Zegras, Mason MacTavish, & Jamie Drysdale getting regular NHL minutes, plus a young 30 goal scorer in Troy Terry; plus, they have young core guys like Max Comtois, Max Jones, & Isac Lundestrom giving young, affordable depth. There's good talent in the AHL (Perrault, Groulx, Helleson), strong prospects in junior (Mintyukov, Pastujov), and a pair of young goalies fighting to be the next 1B with Gibson (Clang & Dostal). Plus, they're in the driver's seat for one of Bedard or Fantilli. The rebuild should be basically finished by this summer - not saying they're immediate contenders, but they will have a young, affordable core with some solid veterans around them (Strome, Vatrano, Henrique) and a few chips left to cash in (Silfverberg, maybe Henrique?)

I could see them signing one or two of the veterans you have them signing here, to keep seats warm, but I can't see them signing 6 veteran skaters & a pair of veteran goalies while just letting the young guys fester in the AHL.
