In a world where the cap is at 88+ mill and McDavid woudlve signed his like 6 years before

I feel McDavid's contract is the border for all other deals. Like Draisaitl, Matthews, MacKinnon (already happened) will probs be the guys making more (To start). Then after McDavid signs his 20mill deal will we see wings, Dman, and others make more than 12.5mill

I mean if the rumor is true that CBJ tried to offer sheet Marner with 13 mil+ contract, and SJ also offered 13+ mil for Tavares as a free agent, there would've been a very realistic possibility that McDavid wouldn't be the highest paid player in the league. And starting from next year, MacKinnon does cost more than him.

I think he did set the bar of some kind, but that won't hold anymore. The elite players that expire next will likely cost more than McDavid, but only for a short while.

That being said, I think McDavid's next contract will be the next (and only) max contract in the league, offered by a team like Leafs or Rangers with bottomless pile of cash. This assuming that these teams won't be re-signing Matthews/Marner and Panarin, respectively.
