Rangers have enough undersized D (Hajek, Jones), so no thanks. Ben Harpur has taken the job at 3rd pair LD with Schneider.

ben harpur lol

that's what most NYR fans were thinking when he was signed and then brought in to play....but he hasn't hurt them. And most importantly, his partner- Schneider hasn't been adversely affected. Schneider has shown he belongs in the NHL and is really heading toward what was expected of him.

While there are clearly other options to upgrade over Harpur on the bottom pairing (who, in his own right, has been relatively stable), they would come relatively cheap. Something for a Mid Round Pick. That will not only be more effective than Merkly, but not require us to basically throw away Kravtsov.

For sure there will be some relatively cheap options to get D depth for the playoff push. I don't think this trade was meant to address that. When drafted he was known to be uber talented- but maturity a wild card... a few years out, not sure where he stands in development or personal growth. In any case- with Fox entrenched...and MAYBE Jones coming, I think NYR have their fill of smallish Dmen. And moving Krav (position of organizational weakness) for a Dman (position of organizational depth) would just continue to a hole in one place and a log jam in another. Of course- if Merkely is ready to break out like Fox or Makar....you gladly deal with that log jam!

Gregor isn't going to be of interest here (being Yet Another Winger). Simek might be interesting though.
