Yeah. I think that’s a big upgrade. Giving up Jokiharju is probably a must considering New Jersey is making the playoffs, they’ll want to replace him with a D to play on the 3rd pairing.

Why not guarantee you get him now before there is a potential bidding war for him? This also helps them make a playoff push. Plus this isn’t a terribly rich offer, he’s a big upgrade over Jokiharju, Mittelstadt has been a huge let down and doesn’t have much value. The 2nd is worth giving up to receive a top 4 D and shore up the D core long term.

Agree he’s huge upgrade on D if he re-signs
Mittelstadt showed up last night with three assists. Might be hope yet

I would take Mitts or Joker out. That Philly pick is gonna be high. Maybe Lyubushkin instead of Joker.

Because New Jersey certainly isn't selling

This move doesn’t make sense for the Devils though.
They already have quite a surplus of forwards as is, at any given night a very decent NHLer will be scratched due to that fierce forward competition (last night it was Zetterlund).
Therefore there’s no real incentive to downgrade rather massively at D (Severson is very important to them) just to recoup a 2nd and another middle six forward you’d have to scratch at any given night.

NJ isn’t moving Sevo for anything other than a massive overpay. He’s basically a self rental for them for a playoff push, and this trade makes the team worse

IMO it would make more sense to grab a LHD to never see Byson play ever again. Joki is fine with Power when hes back...heck clague even looks good next to him. Boosh is the one who needs a steady partner most i think. Find a defense only LHD that excels in zone exits and boom, youve got a pair

That said, NJD would be stupid to move anyone on their defense right now

That’s quite the overpay for a guy who could walk at the end of this season

No chance the Sabres give all that up for a rental- none

In off season we need either two solid right d or one left one right and keep dahlin on right. bryson awful jokiharju very mediocre and can’t defend. Just a neutral puck carrier
Gavrikov from Columbus great 3rd pair left. Very good defender and ufa grab in july. My big hope is a capped out team will need to unload a salary in offseason like Tampa
Dumba Severson mayfield all potential ufas in july

You’re right, they probably won’t move him, but you never know. Moving out a guy who’s playing on their 3rd pairing behind Hamilton and Marino could be done if they’re receiving a 3rd pairing Dman back,

If they weren’t making the playoffs this is something they would want to do, instead of losing him for nothing, but yeah you’re probably right. Playoff teams rarely sell anything at the deadline. That said he is going to be on the 3rd pairing behind Hamilton and Marino. So not as important as he once was to them.

If we are just outside or in a playoff spot by the TDL, I might take a shot at Severson. I can't see NJ moving him

Yeah there aren’t very many sellers this season. Multiple teams are in the hunt for the playoffs. I looked at the few sellers there are and nobody has a impactful right D to trade, Severson would make a ton of sense for Buffalo, but you’re right, New Jersey most likely won’t move him.

Problem is Buffalo already has 3 left D’s in the top 4. Would be very strange to see a top 4 made up of all left D’s lol

I didn’t mean this season. He’s a ufa in july and NJ has Nemec and others for right d and Severson playing third pair unless injuries so unknown whether they sign him
The question is does Dahlin like right side. If he prefers left we need upgrade on Joker who defends better to let Power develop his offence

That said he is going to be on the 3rd pairing behind Hamilton and Marino. So not as important as he once was to them.

First part of your comment I think is correct, but it seems to me you're not fully aware of why Severson has been on the 3rd pair on the Devils for a lot of this season...

There was always gonna be a top 4 RHD playing on the third pair for the Devils, either Marino or Severson.
To decide which one should play 2nd pair and which to play 3rd pair two questions need answering...
1. Which of Marino or Severson has the best chemistry with Graves, the Devils 2nd pair LHD, and...
2. which of Marino or Severson has the best skillset to offset Brendan Smith's shortcomings?

The answer to question 1 is Marino.
The answer to question 2 is Severson.

Severson didn't find much success with Graves (and vice versa) in 21-22 therefore it was always gonna be Marino winning the 2nd RHD job over Severson.
However Marino wouldn't be able to help the Devils tilt the ice as well as they do playing with Brendan Smith, but Severson can do that (and he's doing it really well).
The result is that the Devils have three pairs that are all heavily contributing in creating very favorable playing conditions for the team as a whole, at all times.

It's not down to any shortcomings of Severson that he's seeing less ice-time, a sharp decrease in box score production and getting more oz starts.
It's because Severson is busy keeping Smith's head above water while still driving play.
There are not many third pairs in the league that play contribute as much as the Smith - Severson pairing, and that's all down to the very important role Severson is playing here.

This is not to say that Smith is a terrible NHLer, in my view he's been playing to the level of an above-average bottom-pair guy (which is a big step up from what Ty Smith contributed as 3LHD last year).
Smith is pretty good at rush defense, winning puck battles and in-zone coverage.
But he is not very good with the puck, whether it be carrying it, passing it or shooting it.
That's exactly how Severson complements Smith, and he does it to such a degree that the 3rd pair is overall a significant net positive.

Yeah I know what you meant. Why just put Severson with Power and drop Joker to 3RD and put Clague at 3LD.

Claque and johikarju are ok players but i dont perceive them as shutdown type pk defence in my opinion which i think any team needs for 3rd pair

You guys still have Lybushkin who is a shutdown 3rd pairing D. Clague is not very good, I watched him in Mtl, not a fan tbh. Can’t you just move one of Lybushkin or Jokiharju to the left side? Go with

Samuelsson - Dahlin
Power - Severson
Jokiharju - Lybushkin

That would be a high end D core imo.
