If that's the case, then why would Detroit trade anything for a rental that would likely just help them get a worse pick in the first round?

Actually, assuming you meant "not looking like they will re-sign" with their current teams, changes my response.. with an extension in Detroit, this wouldn't be enough, without one, Detroit doesn't trade anything for a pure rental in a non-playoff year.

Detroit isn't going to retain on two players for that amount. That would leave us with no retention slot left for either Bertuzzy, Nedeljkovic, or any of the other 10 expiring contracts we have.

If VAN needs it we can take a cap dump back instead to make the money work. And this would only be considered if Horvat already has agreed to sign an extension with Detroit for the right amound considering this is the first year he's ever been close to being a PPG player.
