Proving How Garland Fits In 23 24

Created by: NorthernLeafsFan05
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 11, 2023
Published: Jan. 11, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This Armchair GM team is a continuation of my previous team, titled "Buying Low on Connor Garland". There is more relevant context to my reasoning of the trade in that team, which can be found here: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/3855579

With the amount of Marlies still on their ELCs that are looking for a spot in the NHL, Garland can easily be fit into the Leafs lineup without having to worry about moving money out. We will be gaining a ton of capspace in the 24 25 season with all our of expiring contracts, making a Matthews extension (~13 mil) easy and a Nylander extension (~8.5 at most) not so bad. Dubas has done a pretty good job constructing our roster for the long term, and there is no doubt in my mind Garland can be acquired.

Kampf's contract can be constructed based on Sean Kuraly's contract, Timmin's can sign a Holl-like extension, Bunting get's a Nick Paul-like deal, Holmberg signs a bridge, and then we can sign some cheap UFA forwards like Bjugstad or Acciari (just to make @aadoyle happy)

How so? Is it because this point production is down this year despite playing with bad linemates and being stuck on a miserable Canucks team? What about his years of success prior to this season? This season is a huge outlier for Garland. His offense, defense, and transitional game are all there, he has just been wasted in this Canucks system. Or is this just about his size, which means absolutely nothing. Garland is the furthest thing from a terrible player...

He's not terrible he's just not needed and overpaid. He's Kerfoot but worse defensively and costs more cap.

He's a middle 6 secondary winger. He's Kerfoot but a bit better offensively but worse defensively and less versatile. The kicker is he costs more.

You've definitely watched exactly zero Canucks games this season if you think Garland is a worse version of Kerfoot. That is some hockeyDB scouting if I've ever seen it

What years of success? 39 points twice in 2 shortened seasons am I supposed to be blown away from such mediocre production?. Garland is a more expensive Kerfoot with a little more snarl & a slight more offensive upside but that’s about It, I don’t think it’s wise to take that contract for 3 years in a must win scenario. Wasting any assets on a player that will not move the needle particularly someone who’s production has fallen off a cliff isn’t in our best interest. Him & Kerf give the same Production, that’s it. I rather get rid of Kerf then bring in a more expensive version of him. there is a reason Garland’s name hasn’t been in many rumours. His value is low as it should be he isn’t the role or type of player the Leafs need. they need a power-forward not a tiny playmaker who’s shooting % has dropped below 9

Last season Garland was 29th in 5v5 points, above players such as Conner, Rantanen, Forsberg, Nylander, B Tkachuk, Zibanejad, Debrincat, and Tavares. Had a higher 5v5 P/60 than McDavid, Draisaitl, Pastrnak, Ehlers, J Hughes, Barkov, Panarin, Ovechkin, and Guentzel. He did this all while playing in a system that he doesn’t really fit into. But yes he’s bad And definitely overpaid

He's definitely overpaid. But not being great doesn't mean he sucks. He's a good player. So is Kerfoot, who is pretty much an identical player who is less offensive but better defensively and more versatile because he can play centre.
