Dallas wins it, Vegas wins it Buffalo wins it (they add a piece right away and Toronto has to wait for the development of Quinn in a win now mode) and purely trade wise Toronto wins the San jose one, but the San Jose one doesn’t work for Toronto long term

Trade 1: Blatant Dallas win
Trade 2: Blatant Vegas win
Trade 3: small Buffalo win
Trade 4: small Toronto win

He's a Vegas/Oilers fan, so it all makes sense

Sharks aren’t doing that. Doesn’t fit their prospect needs and he hasn’t been that good either. Also retention for that return is a big no thanks

Not really, this destroys their depth and gets rid of a prospect, a 1rst after giving that up the past 4 years (last one being Sandin) and a 2023 second which is bascally another first

A 2nd round pick isn’t basically a 1st, it’s a 2nd. Likely not even in the 30s. Robertson has been underwhelming and the 1st is in ‘24. Doesn’t make any sense for SJ

The Meier trade makes the leafs a better stronger team now, while giving the sharks a prospect whose NHL future is questionable a late 2024 first and a late 2023 second. not sure how that isn't 1st degree robbery from the leafs and an instant fire for mike Grier

What about next year? The goal isn't to be a one and done type team. The goal is to win as many Stanley Cups consecutively. Sakic isn't thinking "let's go all out and screw our cap space for upcoming years", instead he is trying to build a dynasty.

Maybe Im completely wrong, but you only get 50 NHL contract slots and Muzzins contract is up after this year while Webers is up after 3 more (maybe 4?) . Leafs currently at 49 NHL contracts, they need to free up contract slots

that can be done by moving on from other ahl guys, it takes up a contract spot but frees 5 mil for 2 years

How does it free 5 million? Muzzin is likely on LTIR the rest of his career which is 1.5 seasons

From a trade perspective the sharks don't care about the leafs cap, and won't factor it into their valuation of meier. This trade is very lopsided and actively sets the sharks back as it isnt guaranteed or even likely we get a player as good as Meier from the prospects or picks you provided in the trade and thats why we lose

But the Leafs do factor in the cap. As a whole, I just don't like Meier coming to TO bc of their cap space. I wouldn't be surprise if that 2024 1st becomes a player at least near Meier from the recent Leafs picks (excluding 2022 and 2021 due to it being way too soon to tell) such as Jarvis (2020), Bjornfot (2019 - is probably the worst one), Bokk (2018 - another not so strong one), Sandin (2018), Liljegren (2017), Matthews (2016), Steel (2016), Marner (2015), Konecny (2015). +a 2023 second and a prospect whose brother has just panned out into an all star. Again, you value Meier more than cap space but I value cap space more than another wanna be Tkachuk

why on earth would Robertsons brother increase his value lmao. The leafs also aren't tanking anymore so their first round picks from 2016 and 2015 aren't indicative of the quality of prospect the sharks would be expecting back. even then from 2019-2017 no one is on the level of meier or appears to be approaching that, Seth Jarvis is a baller tho. You're convinced that you lose this trade because of cap but the sharks are losing their best forward and most promising player who is entering his prime (PPG + 40 goal scorer this year) for a mid first next year, a late second this year, and a small prospect (sharks already have plenty of those) who has struggled in the NHL and has an extensive injury record already. From an organizational perspective the sharks get nothing that helps them in the next 3 years + nothing that is guaranteed to help them ever while the leafs are getting one of the leagues premier power forwards who is just starting to enter his prime and even if he is a rental he is still an RFA that the leafs could flip for futures as well

What about Konecny? Steel? Lilly looks like a puck moving RHD which is what teams need more than a power forward. But as a whole, I just don't like this trade from the Leafs perspective and you don't have to like it from the Sharks perspective either. The Leafs don't need Meier and that's what I believe. Jason was in the same boat as Nick and maybe the Leafs can find 50% of Jason in Nick which also could attract teams. I fully believe the Leafs lose this trade because they can't afford a luxury like Meier. If you believe SJS loses this trade too then it's a lose-lose situation.
