The usual terrible idea of putting a star player in a new position. Leafs wouldn't be able to sign players they want/need for next season. Destroys the future.

4th and a 5th covers it from SJ's end. Or simply a 3rd.

That's way too much, last year similar players were being retained and acquired for 3rds and 4ths, Lehkonen didn't even get a first

Ok then you don’t get them. It’s as simple as that. 👍🏻

So you think StL would rather hold to an asset while they miss playoffs than acquire a pick?

Doesn’t matter how much you offer, the Canucks aren’t trading Pettersson unless he demands a trade

Yes considering they’re in a position where they could push for the playoffs. Also, I don’t think re-signing Barbashev is out of the question. For a pick that’s alone in the 70s for a guy that plays ES/PP/PK at all 3 forward positions I’d rather take our chances.

There will also be many more teams than Toronto that are interested.

Well considering they have a good chance to make the playoffs yea probably. Same reason Boston or Toronto won’t sell as they have a decent chance to make it too.

No to mention I bet you they will try to resign barby and Accari too

Many teams may be interested but it’s not like there is a ton of available cap space at most competing teams. Most playoff teams will be limited in how many players they can acquire b/c of cap crunch and there could be a lot of players on the move … never know and a lot depends on standings, but I think this could be a buyer’s market at TDL.

I'd venture to guess that's a pro to why Barbashev could return quite a bit considering this post is asking for 50% retention which puts him at a 1.125 cap hit. I'd venture to guess almost every team could fit that in their salary cap given the fact its only 400k below min.

Regardless the point of the response that I made was to outline that there are other options opposed to take a 3rd or let him walk for free.

The point you made would be much more viable for a contract like ROR or Tarasenko where there would still be a substantial cap hit even with 50% retention
