Ivan Provorov Next Season

Created by: OldNYIfan

Description
Penciling in a budget after acquiring Ivan Provorov at the trade deadline in March 2023.

I haven't re-signed any of our prospect RFAs because I don't think that they would affect the economic picture to a noticeable degree even if they make the main roster out of training camp.

The main issues are:
(1) Have I given Mikey Anderson enough, considering his discount this past season?
(2) Have I given Pheonix Copley enough?
(3) Will Jonathan Quick retire? If Quick were to retire, we could pay Copley more and simply get him a backup.

Alternative strategies:
(A) Substitute Alex Iafallo for Cal Petersen in the Provorov trade. Unappetizing.
(B) Don't give up on Petersen or Turcotte and do give up on acquiring Provorov.
(C) Find someone to fill the LhD slot at a lower cap hit than Provorov not named Jeff Chychrun. (UFA Shayne Gostisbehere? UFA Vladislav Gavrikov? Jake McCabe? K'Andre Miller?)

Bottom line: I don't think that you can shoehorn Provorov into the lineup without an unrealistic retention or another major cap move, which is just anathema to me.

I can't imagine that interests philly. Turcotte looks like a major bust, Peterson cleared waivers and makes a boatload of money, walker is just a guy and now philly has added major cap AND retained on provorov for a late 1st that isn't even a 2023 and a 2nd?

If they move him they will do better I suspect

Reasonable trade return. 1st + Turcotte for Provorov. 2nd + Walker to get them to take Petersen and retain salary on Provorov.

I think the Kings learned their lesson with Petersen and won't give a goaltender term based on ~60 NHL games. I suspect they'll give him a 1-year extension around $2M and potentially give him a longer term deal next summer if he can continue his quality play. The only exception is if he pulls a Binnington and wins the Kings a Cup, in which case all bets are off.

Why does Turcotte look like a major bust?

I have nothing nice to say about this so I will simply move on with my day.

Wow.

Because as a former 6oa pick he is barely producing in the AHL in his draft plus 4 season?

Cheaper cap hit and is exactly what LA needs

He's had to deal with several severe illnesses (acute appendicitis and mono) and several injuries (ankle and two concussions). Couple that with the Kings saying they want to take their time with their prospects and the fact that he has looked really good while healthy, and I don't see what the problem is. He's waiver exempt for another season after this one, so there's no hurry.

Everyone said the same thing about Vilardi last season, and now he leads the Kings in goal scoring.

I'm not worried.

Not that his injuries/concussions are going to increase his trade value, but as far as the production goes...he's been hurt alot. Hard to get momentum (develop properly) if you can't stay on the ice. I'm hopeful for his sake he's past the injury bugs and can just get regular ice time. His talent is there.

Interesting trade imo. I do think the LAK would need to send a bit more because that Cal contract is large and PHI doesn't have a ton of interets in a $5M backup. As fast as the $17M to IP, the trade could happen after he gets his bonus on July 1st since this is about next year.

The only point to making the trade at all is to be serious contenders in 2023, not wait until next season. (See my Team Explanation.) Once you let one playoff year go by, Provorov's value to the Kings would be seriously diminished.

Flyers will have zero interest in Turcotte after recently going through with the Nolan Patrick injury saga.
