Maybe I was right

Initial Creation Date: Jan. 13, 2023

Description
I had this idea last offseason, but all Wings fans were against it. "Ken Holland move" "Overpayment" "Bad signing". If this signing had happened, this could look like a steal of a deal. 4x2,000,000

Walman has played a lot on the 3rd pair and has looked good in that role. Then he moved to the 2nd pair when Määttä got injured and now he plays on the 1st pair with Seider. Maybe I'm overrating him, but I think Yzerman should sign him to a long-term contract. He plays so well with Seider and is only 26 years old. If he stays healthy and gets consistent ice time with Seider, I think he has the potential to be a 35+ point guy who plays a good two-way game.

But he only used 1 draft pick and that move was genius because Husso has been great. The only bad part is we are stuck with Chiarot for 4 years.

It's not the most ideal contract, but I think he is still valuable to the team. This defense core would be charmin soft without him. Also think that Chiarot is more like a mentor and protector for the young guys. In 2-3 years Wings could probably trade away Chiarot to a rebuilding team if he truely falls of.

I liked what little I was of Walman at the end of last season. I would really like to see him extended to a bargain contract.

Seider is only 6 hits behind him with 90 and Hronek has 66 and Maatta has 40. Hagg with 36 in 13 games and Lindstrom and Walman are around a hit a game. So it wouldn't be ideal but I think we'd manage plus with Edvinsson next season it would be all good.

I never liked Maatta much before this season but now I'd be all good resigning him as well.

I agree, unless you can get a second for him I would try and resign him, but nothing longer than 3 years.

Seider is though, but Chiarot would probably be the last guy I would want to play against. It's also interesting that Chiarot's contract is up just when Edvinsson's ELC expires. Good thinking by Yzerman. I have also heard some try hard griffins fans say that Johansson / McIsaak are more ready than Edvinsson.

That may be so but I'm going to go with Shawn Horcoff's assessment of Edvinsson.

I don't think it's just the hits that Chiarot brings. It's the toughness in general, net clearing ability and the "you better not mess with my team" mentality that he could instil in the opposition. I actually really don't like Chiarot at all, I think he's pylon, but he does have his uses.

I've seen several goals scored by an open player in front of the net with Chiarot standing there like he's taking pictures.

Ah I could be wrong with my net front assessment. I also have to admit that I have not watched many Detroit games as I usually just watch whatever is on TV. I just kind of expected that a big physical guy like him would be good at clearing the net.

I wouldn’t be opposed to signing Walman to maybe like a 3 year $9m deal, same goes for Maatta.

But we’re so deep at LHD in terms of prospects that will be ready as early as next season and the year after. What are we gonna do with Chiarot, Maatta, Walman, Edvinsson, Wallinder & Johannsen?

The smartest/best thing to do is trade both Unrestricted Free Agents at the end of the year. With how both Walman & Maatta have been playing, we should easily net a 2nd round pick for each.

You could add Sebrango and Buium to that list as well. But we have to remember that everybody can't make the roster and only the best ones makes it. Some of these guys are traded in the future.

I honestly don't know if we should trade Walman for a 2nd. Maybe not this season, but expectations are starting to get higher and higher. We need to keep some of our good players, at least if we can get them to sign for a good deal.

Honestly, if Walman continues to exhibit the ‘dynamic’ abilities he clearly possess on a consistent basis, I wouldn’t trade him for less than a 1st. I would obviously be OK with extending him for around $3m a year but, at 26 years old, you have to wonder if he’s just a late bloomer or a flash in the pan.

For me, I’d ultimately rather trade a guy like that and maybe someone overpays, gives us a 1st and we get to choose the 18 year old kid we have confidence in to develop into a star player.
