I don't see Kane fitting the Gallant style of the team. And as for Kane I don't see why he would like to go to NYR only to try to find a new home in the summer.
I honestly think he will stay a CHI player, he probably won't wave his NMC.

good starter points, but retaining 2.6 mil for 20 games isnt worth a second. monahan probably gets a 2+3, and edmuson gets a first with barrie coming back

its true that Kane is one of the UFAs that doesn't have to worry about chasing a cup in the twilight of his career. Players like kane would usually waive to chase that elusive ring ... but he might be happy enough with his 3. I don't know what motivates him though so who knows ...

Its a starting point ... maybe its a 3rd and Habs keep the 5th. Cuylle is just a stand-in for some prospect the Rangers would part with and the Blackhawks would want.

If he moves it will be with someone that can resign him, which makes it hard to make him a TDL piece. Because what team that is a contender has the space to resign him?
That is what I think. I'm sure he doesn't like losing like this, but 10.5 M I can take being on a bad team for few more months.
It is what I think at least will happen.

Another alternative is Habs keep Edmunston and retain on Dumi and send him straight to the Oilers, with adjusted returns. But maybe that is being too clever

So basically stuck in his own zone all night. Holland would probably pay a first for that

Why does Montreal get a 2nd and Blais for retaining 2.6M?

So that NYR get Kane with almost no cap hit and improve their chances of winning this year while they have an open window to do so

They won't, it's unrealistic. And the 25% retention isn't $2.6M either, it's more like $600k.

Retaining 600K has brought back a 2nd historically

That's what a stay-at-home D is, yes. Ask EDM if they need a good stay-at-home D.

According to your source, this is the only deal that is close:

Feb. 23, 2018: Derick Brassard from Ottawa to Pittsburgh (through Vegas)
Third-party broker: Golden Knights
Pick received: 2018 4th Round Pick
Salary cap space retained: $2 million
Real cash cost: $462,366

The Kane retention would be just over $600k, there's no precedent to suggest that brings a 2nd and a player.
