Wahlstrom

Created by: Dekes
Team: 2022-23 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 13, 2023
Published: Jan. 13, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Bruins acquire a young forward who still seems to be struggling on the isles even though a coaching change.

Maybe on a high scoring, top team like Boston he could start to crack his top potential.

He’s a bigger skilled forward with a canon of a shot, who is pretty athletic, and plays physical.

Before debrusk comes back he could get the Marchand/ Bergeron treatment and see if that helps him get to his top level or they could try to just develop his chem earlier with hall and coyle.

On the 3rd line he would receive the easiest match-ups and having a playmaker like hall and a hard hustling net front guy like coyle on his line should translate to a lot of open holes for wahlstrom.

They could also give him the tage Thompson treatment and play him C next year see if that works better for him
Trades
NYI
  1. Lohrei, Mason [Reserve List]
  2. 2023 1st round pick (BOS)
  3. 2025 2nd round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
Ideally I see him getting a similar package to Dach.

Though dach got a top 15 pick I feel
A B+ tier d prospect in lohrei and a 2nd would make up the difference between a projected 28-32 pick.

Especially since the 2022 draft was considered quite a bit weaker then the 2023 draft

I dont think this is bad value. Only thing is id rather see a protected 2024 1st (maybe top 5 or 10? Doesnt really matter) since the 2023 is likely gonna be around 30 OVR.

Also, Wahlstrom is really good but plays 12 mins a night with bums, and while Hall and Coyle are good, unless Montgomery will give him 15-16+ a night, he wont be what he can. He would also slot in very well where Debrusk is (until he returned from injury and if he plays well then decide what to do with him then). Wahlstrom has a great shot and is physical, which would help open up the ice a lot for Bergeron and Marchand. No disrespect to Coyle but he is not the biggest threat. Hall has been solid imo tho

I'm at the point where I would probably be able to stomach a Wahlstrom trade, but I'd rather move him as part of a package for Meier or another big forward. There's an argument to be made that the Isles need to rebuild (or at least retool significantly), but they're locked into a lot of big deals for the time being. I think they continue to try competing for now and pick 29-32 doesn't really help too much with that.

That said, I think the value is about right, maybe even slightly in the Isles favor, considering Wahlstrom really has stagnated due to factors (imo) largely out of his control

If the bruins do something like this it has to be for someone who can play or has played center. Especially with Lysell as their top prospect.

Wahlstrom has played center. Played pre-USMNTP, a little at USMNTP, not really at BC and then while in AHL. Not a natural center but can slot in

I’d be open to the 24 1st instead.
Ya I also agree I think wahlstrom starts on the 1st line until debrusk returns, bruins have also been pretty good at rolling the top 9, hall and coyle are both averaging 16 minutes a game so I’d assume wahlstrom would get PP2 duties and would average around the same.

Hall has definitely been the star of the 3rd line but coyle has been solid defensively and has also been a good possession guy in the ozone, he’s patient with the puck and doesn’t force plays.

I believe wahlstrom has played C at the junior and AHL level. He would have half a season to work with both krech and bergy where they could give him more knowledge on developing his play down the middle. I’m not to worried about FO% seems to be something that develops later on in players careers, if he could average mid to high 40s I’d be satisfied. One thing us B’s fans will have to come realize is it’s very rare that you have 2 centers as Dominant as bergy and krech were on the draw

If the bruins think he can play center then it’s possible. They will probably need to make this type of trade to keep Pasta and fill center position. These type of trades scan make or break a GM.

personally I'd love for the Islanders to just hang on to a young player scoring a smidge below Taylor Hall on a per 60 basis (Hall: 1.1 G/60, 2.5 pts/60 at 5v5; Wahlstrom: 0.9, 2.3) and use him in a manner befitting a young scoring forward but for some reason that's impossible??

Tell isles management that they are the ones Under and wrongly utilizing him. Seems they want a clutterbuck 2.0 out of him rather then a 30 goal scorer

It's ok value, Boston's pick is going to be a bottom 5 pick. I rather hold on to Wally for another year to see if he can develop more. We don't have any youth on this team. If I did decide to move him, I'm more inclined to package him for a more developed scorer.

Would love to see a
Hall-Wahlstrom-Pasta line next year.
3 solid play drivers, hall will be living the good life setting up those 2 all day. Plus pasta takes most the pressure on that line so that should free up lots of space for wahlstrom to really utilize his shot

from your lips to god's ears, man. obviously he's hurt now, so it's a moot point, but it was crazy seeing him get his minutes jerked around all season. If the team's still a bubble team when he's back from his injury, they should just stick him in the top 6, and in the Ovi spot on PP1, and call it a day. Give him some run before you have to decide what type of extension to give him this summer - or at least showcase him for a potential trade.

Just an idea really I see a similar dach situation developing just like with a lot of the youth right now (laffy/kakko/zadina, etc) a lot of change of scenery’s in need and bruins need some more you guys and given wahlstrom can play C I would think Boston should be intrigued to atleast make an offer

Am I missing something here? 1st, 2nd, and our best prospect on D for a guy who's never hit 25+ points?

Seems like the smart decision right.

Wahlstrom and Nelson out wide, Dobson on the point all 3 have cannons of a shot and would make it hard for PK’s to stack a side. Lee infront of the net going for
Tip ins and well barzal can do whatever really guys dangerous no matter where he is

Monty has done well with the young guys and gives them the opportunities and freedom they need to develop. Debrusk/ Zacha/ freddy all playing their best hockey right now. Give Monty a kid who hustles hard plays physical and has a cannon of a shot who knows what he could do with him. He could be our future top 6 C and the way he plays his size aswell as his 30 goal potential would be a dream Center for Boston.

Zacha/wahlstrom/ coyle/ Beecher/ Harrison all 6’2 and taller as the future C core I’d be in heaven

Barrett Hayton would be a good option also. Coyotes don’t seem to have any idea what they are doing. They seem to think chychrun is worth twice what Lindholm was worth.

That’s pretty accurate because Wahlstroms game this season is pretty much prime clutterbuck with better vision and shot generation.

4th on the isles in goal above replacement yet he doesn’t get more than depth minutes.

You did it. You talked yourself/let yourself be talked into the fantasy that Wahlstom can just waltz into a C position in Boston. This is the NHL. It's just not that easy.

You just don't "Slot in" to the C position in the NHL randomly. It took Bergeron/Krejci years to hone their craft and they came in as centers.

Just who would be the defensive presence on a Hall/Wahlstrom/Pastrnak line?

Kirby Dach is playing RW. If it was easy to "Slot in" at center he would already be doing it. DeBrusk, Pastrnak, our top prospect Lysell fill RW. Need a legitimate center prospect, especially if you are trading 2023 1st.

I mean, this is all just a pipe dream... Not very often, if ever. Players are traded for that much of a haul because the organization that drafted them, couldn't develop them properly. Fact remains he has never hit any part of his potential, he's a buy low prospect whos time in New York may be running out.
