Deadline Game Plan

Team: 2022-23 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 14, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Bruins are obviously going for it all this year, but completely throwing caution into the wind for a team who's staring down the barrel of a long, hard rebuild (potentially right after this season) seems foolish. Plus, there's the obvious team chemistry to consider. Bringing in a huge shake-up piece could ruin what the team clearly has going for them right now in the locker room. Now, it could not, but there's a big risk there. So, I think the Bruins should target key depth players at both forward and defense. Plug-and-play guys who could upgrade over the likes of Smith, Nosek, Greer, and Zboril as well as sit in the press box alongside them at times. This also makes sense cap-space wise for the team. No team in the NHL is going to take on a bad contract for the Bruins to help them out right now. That's simply unrealistic thinking that a team would, at least without a big payout. So, make simple moves, help the team now, and preserve our big future pieces for when they're needed, which is sooner than I think any Bruins fan would like to admit.

I've also included some NCAA free agency targets as Created Player signings, as that period is very close to the deadline and some NCAAers can provide depth as well (look at McLaughlin last year, Krug and Grzelcyk in the past). With the NCAA guys, I signed 5 out-of-system guys, which is probably more than the Bruins will bring in in real life (you're probably looking at 2-3 guys per year from the NCAA) but these are all guys who I think the Bruins would target, so whatever. If you'd like to know why I'd want to add any of these guys in particular, comment and I'll break it down.

Trades
1.
BOS
  1. Bjugstad, Nick
Additional Details:
Bjugstad shouldn't be very pricey at all. A fourth/fifth rounder should be all he's worth on the trade market. Still, he's a reliable center/wing who's very physical and defensively responsible. While not a great face-off guy, he's capable in that regard, as well, which fits in well on a fourth unit setting with Nosek and Foligno. He could also be moved up-and-down the lineup as needed in the case of injuries.
ARI
  1. Olson, Quinn [Reserve List]
  2. Reilly, Mike
  3. 2025 2nd round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
A second should be way more than enough to get Bjudstad, and Reilly is a serviceable depth defender who can play both sides. He's been in the AHL for a long time in Boston, who's blue line is among the very best in the NHL. He'd get far more opportunity to play NHL minutes with Arizona, who could also retain and flip him for more picks if they so chose. Again, a second should be more than enough to adjust for Reilly's seemingly negative trade value and get Bjugstad. To slightly overdo it, I added in Quinn Olson, a former third round pick of the Bruins who's been mediocre at the NCAA level, but going to a team who likes and needs prospects, and helps add a little bit of value (probably no more value than like a fifth or sixth round pick, but value nonetheless)
2.
BOS
  1. Schenn, Luke
Additional Details:
Schenn is a very capable third pair defenseman who's extremely responsible in his own end. The Bruins have had injury trouble on the back end in the past, especially with Brandon Carlo. While Scheen probably doesn't remove Clifton from the lineup on the third pair, he'd be an excellent depth player who could be put into the lineup on a matchup-basis. He's also a huge upgrade over Zboril as 7th D. His value is probably a third round pick, but correct me if I'm wrong.
VAN
  1. Lauko, Jakub
  2. 2023 4th round pick (BOS)
  3. 2023 7th round pick (LAK)
Additional Details:
The Bruins part ways with Jakub Lauko, who I thought played well in his NHL stint to open up the season but was buried by the fantastic play of others around him. Still, he's fairly young and could be an immediate bottom six guy for the Canucks with upside for more. Add two lat-round selections, and I think the value is there to bring in Schenn.

I’d rather just take a 3rd (or possibly even a 2nd if someone offers that) for Schenn

For some reason, it doesn't show the NCAA FAs that I created, probably because I sent them to the AHL. I had the Bruins pick up Justin Hryckowian (C, Northeastern), Jake Livingstone (RD, Minnesota Mankato), Parker Ford (C, Providence), Matt Brown (LW, Boston University), and Austen Swankler (C, Bowling Green). If you go to Long-Term Outlook, you can see how long I signed them for and their cap hits, if you care.

Fair enough. Didn't want to trade a third outright on this ACGM, as I don't like the idea of missing two consecutive rounds in any of the upcoming 3 drafts (assuming the ARZ trade happens). But a 2023 third is obviously in play, too.

Agree that these 2 guys are real targets for BOS (finally not a Horvat trade), but don't see the point of moving Reilly, especially if the cost is a 2nd. It's better just to keep him for depth, then buy him out in the summer since the penalty is only 300k.

BOS can't sign all these guys, they only have 3 contract spots available right now.

The Bruins need the cap to add. Reilly moving on sheds 1.8 mil of cap as he's buried. I didn't want to trade a Craig Smith or Tomas Nosek to maintain the chemistry that the NHL group clearly has. They al like each other, and seeing one of them get moved could hurt morale. Reilly hasn't been with the big club for a long time now, probably wouldn't affect morale as much.

Just send Smith to PRO, you have him scratched anyway and doubt anyone will claim him with his caphit. Then either have ARZ or VAN retain some salary. With the accumulated cap throughout the year, it should work.

Rather keep Reilly, Lauko and the picks.
