That price for JJ Moser? They didn't give up that much for Skjei straight up. Just use the 1st and get a direct replacement.

That trade was for 4 seasons of an underperforming Skjei. A trade like this would set up Carolina at LD for a decade.

I would do a package deal for Moser and Shmaltz, but this is a bit rich for Moser alone right now. Something along the lines of Shmaltz half retained and Moser for this package with an extra first and maybe a blue chip like Nikishin. Nikishin is playing at an elite level n the KHL right now, and once his contract is up there he would be in a better spot timeline wise in Arizona than in Carolina. A little bit of risk with Nikishin coming over from the KHL though, but it could get the deal done.

At that price, it's not worth it. JJ Moser is a fine player and he could be a good value pick up, but at this price, you may as well look at the offer sheet route first. There will be better targets acquirable to replace Skjei when the time is right than Moser at a cheaper cost than this. If you make it just the first, I think the value is fair and maybe? But Moser's still yet to do anything major in his career

No chance they spend THAT much for an unproven player. He’s played well this year, but they only give up that much for a player who helps now with a proven track record.

In the COVID-shortened 2020-2021 season, Max Comtois led the Ducks in goals scored. You've acquired Coghlan and Gunler since then, so just suppose you had spent the first and second to acquire Max. How would you feel about that now?

I'm firmly with @Caniac555 -- you expend packages like that only on proven talents that will be useful long-term. One year is a nice indicator -- not proof.
