Buffalo isn’t trading their top goalie prospect and a 2nd for david savard.

And Colorado should have no interest in moving newhook.

Montreal does all the trades without question. The other teams don't even look at the deals.

Drouin hasn't shown enough to warrant using up that kind of cap space at the deadline. I think the Jets would look elsewhere for 4th line depth.

-Edmonton declines. Do Habs fans even look at Jake Allen's numbers? He's got an .892 SV% and a 3.52 GAA; Campbell, meanwhile, the man who's struggling enough to get dumped four months into a 5-year deal, is at .883 and 3.43. Do you think that's enough of an "upgrade" to justify the rest of the package that the Oilers are giving up here? I can see a fit for Edmundson, maybe, but swapping Armia and JP is basically making Pool Party 5 years older and giving him two more years of term, so it actively makes the Oilers worse now *and* in the future. Oilers pass on this package but keep you on the phone to figure out how to make Edmundson work.

-To combine the next two - Dadonov and Drouin are both offense-first forwards that aren't offering all that much offense this year. The only way I see the Canadians getting value for them is retaining the full 50%, sending out a pick to a third team to get the extra retention, and getting an asset back from the contender for the double-retained Dadonov or Drouin. Otherwise, they're playing out the string with you - I can't see a world where Dallas or Winnipeg gives you any sort of positive asset for taking back those contracts at full cost.

-Minnesota is an awful spot for Hoffman - they've currently got $9.3M in cap space next year with only 8 F, 5 D, and 1 G under contract. Adding Hoffman makes that $4.8M in cap space to sign at least 3 forwards, a defenseman, and a backup goalie just to be able to ice a normal team - it's just terrible cap management to add Hoffman, especially when his main draw is his goalscoring ability and he's only got 7 of those in 30 GP this year (a 19 goals/82 GP pace.)

-Wideman for a 4th is a "sure, whatever" move. Probably a little higher than he's worth but I'm not gonna split hairs on 4th vs 5th round values.

-This trade is absolutely abysmal for Buffalo. Not only are they giving up their #1 goalie prospect in Levi, you expect them to throw in a 2nd rounder this year to get back David Savard??? They already have Rasmus Dahlin, Henri Jokiharju, and Ilya Lyubushkin signed through next year for their RHD depth chart - so why are they giving up multiple premium assets for a 32 year old Savard? Easy no from the Sabres.

-See the Wideman trade, sure whatever to this.

-No from Colorado. Monahan hasn't played in 6 weeks, there's no way they're going to give up a solid 22 year old with tons of team control left for a rental - and unless Monahan is taking an extremely-team friendly deal, that's all he's going to be. Colorado has only $12.4M left in cap space for next season and needs to re-sign or replace a ton of players - even if you assume that Monahan settles for a decent pay cut down to a $4M AAV, that means they'll have $8.4M in space with only 7 forwards signed, with Bowen Byram needing a new deal, and with something needing to be figured out for your third pair on D. Again, bad asset management for a team that should be looking for more budget-friendly players (like, I dunno, maybe Alex Newhook?)

Can someone here join me to sincerely thank @dannibalcorpse for taking the time to write very detailed and relevant comments here, even when trades don't make sense at all. I've learned a lot by reading your comments and even though I don't always agree with you, I truly appreciate the time you take to explain your views. Thank you bro!

replace the two 4th in the Levi trade with Florida's first (10th pick after lottery) and probably still gets declined.

Yes. Fantastic analysis. Truly appreciate you picking apart the trades. Great perspective. I do think Allen is an upgrade over Campbell. Edmonton gets out of a long term contract mistake. Allen is equivalent in the short term. Habs can afford the contract with all the cap space they will have unloading all these vets. And they need avteran goalie for the next few years. Maybe Campbell bounces back otherwise Habs buy him out in a few years. Which they can afford as well. Maybe not the best cap management for MTL but Edmonton had to send cap back to get what was being sent. Edmonton is in win now mode and need D who can play and depth. I saw Edmonson, Allen and Armia as all upgrades and playoff performers that bring value this year and next. Montreal takes on some bad contracts from non contributors in return for picks and prospects. What do you suggest?

If you're Edmonton what are you looking for and how are you moving out cap to get it? D isn't their only need.

Agree on the Drouin and Dadonov points. They haven't put up the numbers but have shown flashes of good play. A playoff contender are more than certainly gonna put up a low pick for a skilled rental who can score or set up when playing with legit stars. With Drouins recent injury he's probably not even worth trading and we re better off signing him for 1.5 mil for one more season in hopes that he finally shows something worthwhile.

Fair enough on the Monaghan Newnhook deal. I keep seeing him linked to Colorado. He's definitely worth a first pick based on the start of his season and previous trade deadlines. Colorado does t have a first to give up, so what do you suggest they would trade for a decent second line center. Newhook was probably pushing it. Maybe a 1st round propsect in the system?

Monagahan injury doesn't help and he just went on LTIR today. So any dreams of trading for a first round pick or prospect probably just went out the window for Hughes.

Fair point in Hoffman and Minny. At this point I would send Hoffman anywhere to anyone who will take him for whatever we can get. Somebody must have a use for him?

What does it take to get Levi in your opinion?

Thanks for the dialogue.
