Yes but it doesn’t really help to still have guys like Merfoot/Jarnkrok/Engvall/Holl on the team when they are replaceable in Keefe’s system. But we are stuck with them at least most are UFA.

I get that you aren't a Leafs Fan so I'll explain why the Leafs laugh in the opposing trade partners face:

Trade 1: Holl has been one of our best defensemen at 2 mill per year and Niemela is our 3rd best prospect at RHD. So, remove those 2 and you've got a deal (maybe add a 3rd but same thing)

Trade 2: Minten is our second best prospect and Sandin is very very valuable (considering his cap hit and how young he is and him being a former 1rst and his play as of late) and then the 2 firsts. Try 1 first and 1 of Sandin or Minten and the Leafs accept

Holl has been adequate at best. Has he had some good stretches? Sure. But he in no way, shape or form has he been our best defender. He is a replaceable, but serviceable bottom 6 d man. I would trade him in a heartbeat if we could get someone on the right side with better d zone presence and sandpaper. Holl is prone to way too many brain farts in all zones.

Who has been our best defensemen according to you? Why is it that every time he is on the ice, I notice him because he is/trying to make a good play? Everyone has brain farts in all zones because they are human. Who exactly do we get out of this deal that replaces Holl?

In my mind, Lilly and Gio have been exceptional. I would also put Brodie and Sandin ahead of him this season. Sandin has been injured and has had his ups and downs same as Holl, but he is a much smarter player than Holl, makes better outlet passes and is younger with much more room to grow. I'm not saying Holl is useless, he just has some bad habits that I don't like. He makes poor decisions with the puck in the defensive and offensive zone regularly. At least once a game he makes soft clearing attempts resulting in give aways, pinches at the blue line to make a hit when he has no coverage behind him, gets lost in his d zone coverage leaving his man open. Again, he is a good bottom pairing option that can play up the lineup when needed, but shouldn't be relied upon for regular top 4 minutes, IMO. But you make it sound like he's been the pillar on defense all year. I disagree.

I think alot of the mistakes made by our defense in general are covered up by a strong defensive forward group, but that's another story. Bottom line, I doubt he is resigned this offseason and I for one am fine with it.

I am not trying to make it sound like Holl has been Jesus but I am saying he is someone who get ripped apart by fans/media (like Gardiner) and all of a sudden get thrown into the 1rst pairing and excels at it. You are right about Lilly being amazing though (If I were to overhype a defensemen, it would be Lilly). He 100% shouldn't be relied upon for top 4 minutes but isn't awful at it if injuries come. He is a puck moving RHD and should have value so I hope he returns for at least 1 more season.
I feel that the team needed him and he stepped up big time with all the injuries to the D core and I am trying to credit him with that

100% agree with you on this. He was good when needed. But I do believe his deficiencies will outweigh his price tag come off-season.

You should check our money puck tweet today on top defense pairs (xGA /60). Gio /Holl 16th, Sandin /Lili 17th. Both pairs have been excellent, in part due to strong defensive forwards buying in . Just need to get Brodie healthy and Mo back to his best 🤞

I hope he's comes cheap bc it won't be worth the hassle to get another RHD at a cheap price
