If you look at 3rd team retaining salary, I think depending on the salary retain it’s a 4th or 5th round pick

Easy NO THANKS from the Rangers because they already have a winger that never scores named Sammy Blais. Habs would have to give a 1st round pick and retain 50% for the Rangers to even think about taking Drouin and they may give you a bag of old pucks in exchange.

Hawks aren't giving a top 35 pick for extra retention on a Kane deal. The real $$ amount will be $400k or less depending on when the trade happens. Try a 5th.

Still a "no" from the Avs. You can keep trying all you want but the Avs aren't trading their 2023 1st, especially not for Monahan.

-It's been said ad nauseam but Colorado doesn't need Sean Monahan and isn't giving up this year's 1st for him - they've only had 6 picks in the last two drafts, with half of those being in the 6th & 7th; and if they trade this year's first they won't pick until the 5th round in the 2023 draft. Also worth noting: Sean Monahan has already missed 6 weeks with an injury. With his injury history, don't you think teams are going to see this as a huge red flag?

-I could see Edmonton thinking about this but I'd think that they might run into some cap trouble next year without moving someone. They've only got 8 forwards under contract for next year and only $8.3M in cap space - plus Evan Bouchard will be needing a new deal, along with a few other RFA forwards. Oilers fans can probably shed more light on this, but I would thinking adding Eddy to next year's roster might create a bit of a logjam that would force them to trade a guy.

-No chance the Rangers would bite on this. They'd be spending a big chunk of their deadline cash on turning Kravstov (5 pts in 24 GP, 23 years old, RFA) into Drouin (0-12-12 in 28 GP, $2.75M cap hit, pending UFA). I just don't think it's enough of an improvement for them to send out a player like Kravstov - I think he's better used as a chip to potentially get a winger with term, if they were going to use him in a move. Drouin just has too big of a cap hit for the production he brings to the table - I still say that with him (and Dadonov) Montreal will get the best return by sending a later pick to a third team to double-retain those guys down to cap hits that are more in line with their bottom-6 production.

-Speaking of third teams, no one is giving up a 2nd round pick for retention - there's no precedent really for that kind of price. Florida got a 6th rounder and the rights to a 25 year old KHL guy for retaining $1.325M of Max Domi last year; San Jose got a 4th for retaining $1.375M of Nick Foligno two years ago, the Leafs got a 5th for retaining $1.1M of Robin Lehner three years ago, I could go on but you get the point. Max I could see the Habs getting as a third team on a Kane or Toews retention would be a 4th and a warm body prospect.

It's $2.625 in cap hit, but the real dollars will be $400k or less depending on when the trade is made. Kane's actual salary this season is only $2.9m. Half of that has already been paid. Sorry, but $400k of retention doesn't get much asset wise.

It's wishful thinking to believe Monahan is bringing back a 1st from the Avs. I'm not even sure why anyone would pay that price; he just is not a difference-maker. Plus, there is a strong chance he gets injured again.

When everyone is healthy, Colorado can roll out these potential lines:

Nichushkin - Mackinnon - Rantanen
Lehkonen - Landeskog - Rodridgues
Newhook - Compher - O'Connor
Cogliano - Helm - Malgin

I don't see anyone in that top 6 that Monahan knocks out of their lineup spot, which means you're upgrading your bottom 6. Do you really think it's good asset management for *any* team to spend a 1st to upgrade their 3rd line? Much less an Avs team that's already traded two of their top prospects at last year's deadline, and between the 2021, '22, & '23 drafts only has kept 10 picks (with 7 of those 10 being in the 5th round or later)? I just can't see them moving this year's 1st unless something incredible falls into their laps, value-wise.
