Flyers go young and old; Deal with Detroit for Howard

Description
Dear Red Wings fans, I seriously have no idea what trade value Jimmy Howard has right now. The goalie market is a glut but his experience and achievements are great to bring on board. His injuries are a big question mark, and that cap hit is difficult. What do you guys think will happen with him? Bishop went for a 4th, so it has to be less? A real deal could happen but obviously the cap hit makes it really difficult, and of course everything rides on this expansion draft. At least, it looks possible here. Would be a great fit, IMHO.

As to the youth movement here, this is an optimistic scenario where the kids kill it in camp and Hexy and Haks feel obliged to put them in the lineup. More realistically, this could be the situation in mid-season.

Line combinations: I approached this by mixing up the best 5v5 play drivers. Couts is the best at this so he carries that 2nd line. Voracek is typically our best at controlled zone entries, so that will hopefully counterbalance Lindblom's adjustments to the NHL in that department. Schenn is an underrated play driver at 5v5 so I like him paired with the rookies. Maybe in turn the softer minutes plus the speed of Nico can ignite more 5v5 scoring opportunities for Schenn.
Provorov was tasked with carrying MacDonald last year; Morin should be easier. Hagg and MacDonald worries me, but it's the third pair. Consider that subject to change.

Overpay for Howard unless half the salary is retained or they take AMac.

You really think Howard is an albatross because of the contract? I'd gladly add MacDonald, but I'd be shocked if Detroit would take 3 years of his deal. My impression was their D was already crowded with committed salary.

Retained sounds good, maybe even the only way a Howard deal gets done. Half seems like too much though.

Sure the 3rd is nice, but I don't think there's any chance of the Flyers acquiring a forward this off-season. Filppula's NMC/NTC might nix it as well; not sure. For certain though, they really wouldn't like the additional term for Pouliot.

Yeah they wouldn't take AMac but yes his contract is that bad. 50% retained seems more than fair when we're giving up Weal
