Description
Dadonov, Drouin, Byron and Monahan are gone, leaving a ton of cap space, added with Price on LTIR. If we ever get any return at 2023 TDL, it would be late picks. I think Edmunson stays and is traded in 2024.

At the 2023 draft, we pick between 6 and 9. Whoever we pick, it's a long time project.

We have too many D. One or two guys should be moved before next season starts. I see Wideman being traded before the start of the season, and Edmunson at 2024 TDL to make spots for Barron, Harris and Xhekaj.

At F, with Hoffman being on his last year, he should be moved more easily with retention, probably a draft day move. This will open a spot for Ylonen. A 3rd line composed of Farrell, Dvorak and Ylonen could be really fun to watch. I'd like to see Harvey-Pinard on 4th line with Evans. Time to put Gally on 4th line, thanks for all the good years, but we need to make place for the kids. Armia will be a healthy scratch most of the season. Pitlick will most likely go through waivers and either play in Laval or get claimed.

In nets, Montembeault could get a 50-50 duty if he continues to play well. We definitely need to try to get a good goalie prospect. We should draft a goalie in the 2nd or 3rd round.

In Laval, I'd love to see Kidney, Mesar and Roy tear up the AHL, maybe on the same line. It will be the last year for Norlinder to make an impression. He'll likely be traded in a package or he'll return to SHL. Beck should get a second year in Peterborough. Hutson will be really good, but he needs 1 or 2 years in NCAA to muscle up.

We will have a ton of cap space. If he's available, I'd like to sign Bo Horvat to play behind Suzuki. A great TWF, good at faceoffs, good leader and can get 60 points. He'd be paired with Slafkovsky. Anderson would complete the line to add grit. Is 7.5M enough? Maybe 8?

Horvat isn't signing for that little, certainly not for a team that is in the basement

If Horvat was signing a $7.5M extension he'd be staying in Vancouver, most likely. He's getting $8M+ on the open market.

I'm so confused by why some Habs fans refuse to give out a contract higher than Nick Suzuki's. Matt Boldy, while a good player, is less of a pure goal scorer than Caufield and just signed 7x$7M to stay in Minnesota. Caufield is also on pace to score more goals than Jason Robertson did last year (on pace for 47 vs. JRob's 41) and Robertson signed a 4x$7.75M bridge deal. I don't see any reason why Caufield would sign a long-term deal less than $8M AAV.

Also: even if you give Caufield $8M and Horvat $9M, you still have more than enough room to keep Hoffman. You're not out of the rebuild just yet, so there's zero reason to be attaching a pick to dump a player when you have the cap room to carry him. Throw him in the press box and let Justin Barron get minutes in Laval, if you don't want him playing every night - but don't give up an asset to shed cap you don't need to shed.

I like the post overall, I agree on a lot of things
What I can't see the team doing :
1- Trading Mike Hoffman. Look at the left side, I love Farrell but he is still unproven. RHP isn't either but I agree he should be our 4th line left winger. Slafkovsky is playing 2nd or 3rd or on the 4th line. They don't trust him yet to play top 6 minutes consistently. We just don't have depth on the LW.
2- Trading Wideman. He is a GREAT leader, all the guys likes him. He should be MTL 7th dman or 8th dman if you have Kovacevic the #7. He doesn't have to play, just to be with the team out the ice is good
3- Xhekaj playing over Harris. Harris is playing more minute and against harder competition because he is a lot better than Xhekaj. Xhekaj is playing sheltered minutes against weak competition at 5 on 5 but plays on the 2nd unit of the PP. He brings something unique, but he should remain on the 3rd pairing.
    4. Armia being healthy scratch. They just don't scratch year after year, he is playing ...
What I do agree and like
1- Bo Horvat. I think at 7.5M it could make sense IF you give him 7 years. He is not signing under max terms and he will want big money. I can see Colombus giving him something like that if they don't win the Connor Bedard lottery
2- Gallagher on the 4th line. Hard yes
3- Barron healthy scratch. No, send him in the AHL and have Wideman staying with the team

I really like your AGM tho

Signing Horvat to that contract and PLD via free agent in 2024 would bolster that top 6
