Monahan has played 25 of 46 games for MTL and is currently on LTIR. He has 17 points in those 25 games which is good but not outstanding. Not sure why you'd be targeting him at such an exorbitant price considering how much he is injured and how limited his playoff performance is. Aren't there better options out there to fill out a bottom-six role that won't cost you as much?

How so? A 1st rounder likely between 24-32 seems about right for 50% retained. More than fair for both sides.

He has 21pts in 30 playoff games... thats a 58pt pace over 82 games. Definitely not exorbitant whatsoever.

1. He’s on LTIR
2. Scored just 6 goals all year
3. Sh*t defender
4. Gonna play fourth line minutes at best

Consider Friedman is saying the price for toews is a 2nd or 3rd round pick, why would any team trade a 1st for monahan when there are at worst equivalent c options available for cheaper

Monahan is still injury prone, teams won’t move s 1st for a guy they can’t trust to stay healthy

So you're just gonna gloss over the fact that Toews comes with a 10.5m salary then? Toews current production is less than that of Monahan's, and he's a much less effective defensive player than Sean is at this stage of his career. That's why.

But you're right tho yes, Monahan is presently hurt.

So your supposition is that he will continue that pace at this point of his career? Seems risky. He's had decent playoff performances and some not-so-good ones. If you think it's a fair price, that's cool but I think it's a lot to pay for a guy that has a high likelihood of getting injured again and isn't much of a difference-maker.

so again, 5.25m instead of 3.2. That's a fairly big difference for teams this season.

And monahan comes with a 6.5m. He’s not easy to trade either . Retaining on him holds not value, you have to just to move him ar all. You don’t get extra for that. Neither wil the hawks

Toews is much better defensively, monahan is not, that’s wrong to say the opposite

Toews can stay health, monahan can not

It’s more than just points and a looking up their totals

Toews is a -37 over a full 82, Monahan is -16. So your point is moot.

If the concern is Monahan's injury problems, seems like the logical solution is to make the 1st conditional on him playing a certain number or percentage of playoff games and have it be a 2nd otherwise.

Oh for sure. I have no doubt that's what smart actual NHL gm's will do if they acquire him.

Monahan salary is 6m, toews is 2.9m. It’s easier for teams to retain on low salary contacts, it’s not just the cap but they retain the real salary too, double retaining on toews will be super easy

The 1st is too much if he’s fully healthy, a 3c is not worth that in almost every situation

Lowry into top 6, kind of defeats the purpose of the whole exercise. I’m sure there’s some wing rental options out there to stack up top 9 a little easier than buying monahan or toews and revisit in offseason depending on Dubois/scheifele contract status.

I wouldn't just assume he's going to be a playoff performer when he's been inconsistent like that. His best playoff year was 19-20 (which was his last year playing in the playoffs) and he had 8 points in 10 games which is good but 3 of those were second assists which aren't worth quite as much. He was good at the dot (57%) and did a solid job of driving play. Since then, he had had a bad season afterwards when he did play (23 pts in 65 games) and didn't play in the playoffs because of the injury which he had serious surgery to address. He has missed more games than he has played this season. When you add that all up, it just seems like too high a price to pay for him and it is unreasonable for the Canadiens to expect to get a 1st for him (when they already got a 1st for taking him in the first place). Get what you can and move on.

My only thought is that Lowry would take Barron's place in the top-6, which would be an upgrade, and Monahan would C the 3rd line over Lowry, which wld also be a slight upgrade.

Monahan is a cap dump and injured again. He isn't worth a 1st under any circumstances and definitely isn't worth a better player than him and a first.

You're likely stuck with Monahan.
