Created by: Green4D4
Team: 2023-24 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 23, 2023
Published: Jan. 23, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
New ownership, new management, new coach, new(ish) roster...

Draft at 9 - RHD (David Reinbacher).

Tier: Projected bubble top and middle-of-the-lineup player

Source: The Athletic - Corey Pronman

6'2" - 187 lbs

Analysis: Reinbacher is the latest product of the suddenly resurgent wave of Austrian talent and has quickly emerged as the best defense prospect in the 2022 draft. He’s been playing a real role in the top Switzerland league, albeit not on an overly strong club and producing a lot of offense versus men. He’s a mobile, 6-foot-2 right-shot defenseman who can contribute at both ends. Reinbacher’s gap control is strong, killing a lot of plays due to his feet and reach even if he’s not overly physical. He’s able to both skate and pass pucks up ice. His offensive touch isn’t elite, but he has creativity with the puck and makes good decisions. There’s a lot in his game that looks like a potential top-four defenseman in the NHL.

That trade is intriguing. I don't know a ton about Benoit, but I would think that the Sens can find an LD easily enough if needed via free agency and to trade for someone to stick in 3rd LD I would rather keep Branstrom. Would be more likely to make the move if it was a RD.

I like the draft pick and I think that is right around where they are going to end up in the draft in the 7-10 area.

I wouldn't sign Ritchie, let guys like kelly or Ostuphuk in the lineup instead.

Ritchie is a stop gap grinder on the 4th line. Rather give Osty the same treatment as Greig and Norris with call-ups and full AHL season under the belt. Have him grow some chemistry with Boucher and Jarventie/Sokolov/Lodin.

It's not exactly a D heavy draft so having him from 7-10 would be ideal drafting based on position of course.

Brannstrom isn't going to get much playing time behind Chabot and Sanderson anymore. Given he's only scored twice in almost 160 games, his services and strengths are wasted on the 3rd pair. Might as well include him in a trade with Anaheim to acquire a player more suited for the bottom pair.

Given that move, Mayfield is my RHD pickup. Big and mobile, double his salary and give him some security. Worst case, he's 3rd pair getting paid less than Hamonic.

We also like Benoit for our bottom pair, he's our Arber Xkekaj.

We also really have no room for Brannstrom. With Fowler on Left and Dryadale on right, both guys need stay at home D types as partners which locks Brainstorm out of our top 4, and we have Zellweger and Mintyokov in the pipeline very near getting a roster spots.

Kid needs a change of scenery where he can play with a strong defensive D to open up his game, unfortunately that's what Anaheim doesn't have any excess of.

6' 3" with an average of about 3 hits per game which leads the Ducks by a wide margin. The Ducks aren't trading him for another sub-6" defenseman. Just take all the extra crap out of the trade and leave it as Zaitsev and a 2nd for FCs.

Straight up forgot about Fowler. Has he been healthy this season?

I liked how hard Benny played when Ottawa faced them. Liked he's competitiveness too. Seems like a good teammate. I could see Ottawa offering a Jarventie (LW power forward) over Brannstrom if that is something more in the needs list for ANA. If not, more picks?

I will preface this with Benoit is not worth much on paper. He is your prototypical big bruiser who is going to put up less than 10 pts a season (although somehow he had back to back goals this season?), his value comes from hits and shot blocks.

That said, he is one of only two we have this season (Kulikov being the other) and the only one we are likely to keep into next year. The guy has been shoved onto the 2nd pair to try and be Klingberg's nanny and has done a rather good job for a young undrafted player. His role should be 3rd line, but the guy is showing he is not totally out of place if he needs to play up. I'd be hard pressed to give him up on the basis that defensive D is the absolute biggest need on the team.

Fowler's been healthy, just a bit brutal to start the year. Things seem to have stabilized with him.

To add on, I really liked the Benoit-Vaakanainen pairing that we saw for just a couple of games. If they were the Ducks 3rd pair next season I'd be pretty happy about it, but that also assumes they find an actual 2nd pair to push both down.

Fowler has been massively over played and he's cracked in more than a few games under the strain of being the only top-4 guy on the entire team. I know you know that Gibby, but for any randos out there looking at nothing but Fowler's stats.

Yeah, really isn't the guys fault, while he is a utility knife defenseman with offensive leanings, but we have no defensive D on the right side to pair him with. He is paired with Kulikov right now who is having to play on his offhand, but Kulikov is not a top pairing D, he's aging and his foot speed isn't really there to keep up. Benoit is playing 2nd pairing with Klingberg to try and stem the bleeding that comes from putting a guy who should honest to god switch to winger on the back end. Then there is Shattenkirk, who even on third pairing has cracked a lot under pressure and has given up so many unforced turnovers in our own zone that end up in the back of the net its just brutal to watch.

Cam will be a fine top 4 defenseman to finish out his contract and career in Anaheim, he just needs to not be asked to carry the entire top 4 defensively.

Shattenkirk-Beaulieu get my vote for worst pair in the NHL. Yikes what a s**t show.

Holden-Zaitsev earlier in the season was up there. Prior to that, Mete-J.Brown last year. Holy mother of god, I lost my mind for 2 days straight watching them live in Ottawa against two terrible teams in Chicago and Arizona. I couldn't believe it. Normal hockey sense was non-existent.

Now I just think DJ Smith is a bad coach.

LOL, the Ducks and Ottawa parallels continue then because Dallas Eakins is a joke. Not a funny one though,

Why would OTT make this trade when they can buy Z out for 2.8M this year and 800k next?
