Staying Competitive Pt 2

Created by: Big_Rock_Brock
Team: 2023-24 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 23, 2023
Published: Jan. 23, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This year is pretty much a lost cause, the Islanders pretty much have no choice but to start building for the next 1-3 years because by then whatever window they even have left will be slammed shut. They either have to massively retool NOW or blow it up.

No to moving Romanov, that is a terrible idea and Aho is barely a 3rd pairing d man, he should be the 7th on a good team.

Aho is terrible, constantly physically overmatched and along with Dobson the softest D pair in the league.

OP, Do you really think this team is a contender?

If our cup window was an elevator door this feels like we are trying to keep it wedged open armed only with a plastic spoon. Not that I wouldn’t be excited with the addition of Meier but I’d think we would come up short and we are only kicking the retool/rebuild can another season down the road. At which point the core pieces we need to build around would have had another year wasted.

Aho is not terrible. He’s playing to his ceiling which is all you can ask of him. As you mentioned which I agree with he’s 7th D on a good team or as it turns out a bottom pair guy on a bang average team. What more can he do?

contender? honestly who knows. I like the depth plus you never know what youre gonna get out of rookies like Raty Dufour and Bolduc. But it's alot of question marks and a last ditch effort at saving the "core" so they arent completely horrendous for the next 5+ years and lose Sorokin

for what it's worth, it all becomes a moot point because I can't see LA paying a 1st and a 3rd AND retaining $5M extra on Petersen just to get a rental Varlamov - Petersen has looked closer to his old self in the AHL and at the very worst comes back as an expensive 1B next season. Seeing as the Meier trade requires the 1st LA would be sending you, i'd say that deal is DOA too.

for the others - Minnesota isn't going to acquire Beau without sending a cap hit back, if they acquire him at all. And even if Detroit had a spot for Romanov, trading a 23 year old LHD you just spent a 1st round pick on last year for a pair of 2nds is bad asset management. If you really think it's retool/rebuild time, a 23 year old NHL-caliber player is going to be more valuable to your team than the potential of a pair of guys you're picking in the low 40s.
