Why is Portillo a better option for the Kings than David Hrenak, who is already in the Kings' system?

No need to spend $2 mill on another 4th L LW. You have Asplund, and you can sign a guy like M.Nieto for 900K-$1 mill.

Do the Kings really think all that highly of a kid they stuck in the ECHL ?

Portillo is a couple years younger as well, so he could be insurance If Hranek doesn’t work out

Also, can u ever have too many good goalie prospects?

Jonathan Quick started his career in the ECHL.

The Kings needed a place to stash Copley at the beginning of the season, and Petersen now. This is Hrenak's first pro season, so he drew the short straw against Villalta on the ECHL assignment. They'd rather have him be playing games in with the Swamp Rabbits than playing 3rd string for the Reign.

Next season, Hrenak will be Ontario's starter.

    We’ll see about that
But even if all that’s true- then again, still doesn’t hurt to have another good goalie prospect
Never know how they’ll turn out- just look at Petersen

The Kings already have a logjam of professional goalie prospects between 21-24 years old.

    Hrenak - 24
    Villalta - 23
    Ingham - 22
    Parik - 21

These guys are fighting for 3 spots in AHL-Ontario and ECHL-Greeneville. They had to allow Parik to sign an AHL contract with Colorado's affiliate to get him some playing time, because they didn't have any spots for him in the system.

The Kings could be interested in a goaltender prospect, but if they are, they're looking for 18-19 year old guys in junior or Europe, not guys that have already gone pro. They don't have anywhere to play them.

I don't think Portillo is an upgrade over Hrenak.

Ingham and Parik are both promising options as well.

    Villalta is admittedly a bust.

Well i think Portillo is a better goalie prospect than any of them,
and it’s reasonable to think the Kings could as well
    At the very least,
him & Hrenak are neck & neck

    And for the last time,
it never hurts to have too many good goalie prospects

The Kings bent over backwards to make sure they were able to sign Hrenak to his ELC after he essentially single-handedly dragged St. Cloud to the Frozen Four in consecutive years. They convinced him to go back for a 5th-year senior season, where he unfortunately was injured for their last playoff game (and were demolished playing with the backup).

It absolutely hurts if you don't have a place to play them all. If Petersen and Hrenak are playing in the AHL next season and Parik and Ingham are going to be playing in the ECHL, where will Portillo play?

It certainly doesn't hurt to have too many good RHD prospects, which is where the Kings currently are. They're not going to trade their only defensive prospect with size if they're not getting an upgrade in return.

In this case, I think both teams will stick with the assets they have.

U already admitted the one guy is a bust
And of Petersen is still in the AHL next year, then he’s a bust too
And just bc the Kings wanted to sign their best goalie prospect-
    1- that doesn’t mean he’s a sure thing
    2- doesn’t mean he’s better than Portillo
3- even if that think Hranek is better, it doesn’t mean they’d turn down insurance

    Goalies develop unpredictably
And there’s a very easy way to get them playing time
Petersen is either in the NHL, or it doesn’t matter what they do with him

If goalie prospects aren't a sure thing and it's always better to have more of them, then why would Buffalo even consider trading him? They should keep him in case their other guys don't work out.

The Kings don't need another 22-year old goaltender prospect. If you want to send over UPL or a 18/19-year old version of Portillo, then the Kings might be interested.

    We don’t want to
He supposedly doesn’t wanna sign here
That’s the only reason he’d be available
    Otherwise, we would keep him

Then why doesn't LA just wait until he's a UFA next summer and sign him for free like they're going to do with Ryan Johnson this summer?

Bc he’s unlikely to get to UFA
Sabres will trade Portillo somewhere he’ll likely sign with
If LA (or whoever) wants him, they might not wanna risk him going to the UFA market- he may never get there

Johnson may or may not get traded bc we’ll get a 2nd for him if he goes to UFA

Portillo will be moved for whatever we can get
Maybe it’s to LA, maybe it’s to someone else

If Johnson reaches free agency, Buffalo does not get any compensation. Not sure where you came up with that.

He was a 1st round pick
If he doesn’t sign with us then we get a 2nd as compensation

I'd be very interested to see where this rule is in the CBA, because I've read the NCAA UFA section several times [8.6 (c)], and it doesn't say anything about compensation for NCAA players that don't sign. If it's referenced elsewhere, I'd very much like to know where.

One way or the other, it doesn't change the fact that the Kings still don't need another 22-year old goaltender.
