The Kings bent over backwards to make sure they were able to sign Hrenak to his ELC after he essentially single-handedly dragged St. Cloud to the Frozen Four in consecutive years. They convinced him to go back for a 5th-year senior season, where he unfortunately was injured for their last playoff game (and were demolished playing with the backup).
It absolutely hurts if you don't have a place to play them all. If Petersen and Hrenak are playing in the AHL next season and Parik and Ingham are going to be playing in the ECHL, where will Portillo play?
It certainly doesn't hurt to have too many good RHD prospects, which is where the Kings currently are. They're not going to trade their only defensive prospect with size if they're not getting an upgrade in return.
In this case, I think both teams will stick with the assets they have.
U already admitted the one guy is a bust
And of Petersen is still in the AHL next year, then he’s a bust too
And just bc the Kings wanted to sign their best goalie prospect-
1- that doesn’t mean he’s a sure thing
2- doesn’t mean he’s better than Portillo
3- even if that think Hranek is better, it doesn’t mean they’d turn down insurance
Goalies develop unpredictably
And there’s a very easy way to get them playing time
Petersen is either in the NHL, or it doesn’t matter what they do with him
