Description
This team needs to re-tool. By my novice-level of hockey knowledge account, discounting this season there will be another 2 seasons of mediocre to sub-par level performance. If everything should go to plan then one assumes season 25/26 they are competitive again and should really be able to make a tilt at the cup the following season(26/27).

Naturally it hinges on the ability for management to get pretty much every roster decision correct, Which I also realise is almost certainly unachievable. But in my perfect world, between then and now… in no particular order here are just some thoughts about how it can be done.

Let the deadweight drop off. Use this deadline to acquire some picks, dealing anyone of any value. Mayfield, parise, varlamov, Nelson.

Dare I say it; Start listening to offers for Sorokin this off-season. He’s got mega value. It could be this is the way we net an all star talent to play alongside barzal.

I’d still believe we would have to add another big fish and probably another Tier B guy down the road via free agency if we want to compete on this timeline. But that would attainable one the likes of Lee, Palmieri and jgp contracts expire.

Goal tending isn’t so important at this stage anyway when you are not gunning for the cup nor actively trying to lose. Sign someone in the 2-3mil range and a back up for league min on short term deals.

All the cap space created when clutter Martin Bailey and beau come off contract and + varly and presumably Nelson’s contract off the books via trades gives us plenty of breathing room to re-sign Dobson plus whatever else is needed to fill out the roster in the short term.

Hopefully Räty reaches or even surpasses his ceiling and can be 2C.
I have faith that holmstrom will turn into a serviceable middle six 6 guy given what we’ve seen from him so far. wahlstrom is already that.

Can Ishakov and Dufour be difference-makers/role players on this team? We have 2 seasons which is ample time to find out before we are playing meaningful hockey again.

Palmieri, Cizikas, Lee, JGP will still be around but that is plenty of cap coming off the roster when I think the next window opens. As I mentioned earlier that’s enough space leading up to the 25/26 season to go out and get another star and fill any holes in the line up that may need plugging…like perhaps raty can’t fill that 2C role, holmstrom is only a 4th line guy and Dufour is a bust… So use all that cap space to iron out the roster. Also by this stage the farm should be replenished so maybe there are potential call ups already in the system.

Defence I don’t feel requires too much thought. Dobson and Pelech are the untouchables.
I‘d stick with pulock unless someone is paying overs for him.
Romanov is fine I think, he’s still only 22 so you’d assume he’s developed his game enough in the next 2 and a half years to justify his position. We can figure out the bottom pairing on the run.

So there you have it. Pie in the sky or is this the right approach? I think management need to make the call now about how they want to navigate the short to medium term. Pick a path and act accordingly.

I’m not married to this idea btw. Hell a month ago i thought bringing in a Meier would be the answer to all our problems. And next month who bloody knows… congrats if you got this far.

Note; the signed players to the roster can be anyone who fits the bill. I’ve just picked examples in a realistic price range for the sake of the exercise. Same with Bratt for Sorokin and all the trades.

If Islanders can resign Varlamov to league minimum Kings might offer a 3rd for him but no chance youd get a 2nd for a 35 yr old goalie. If the Kings are knocking on doors for a goalie they wont be knocking on the Islanders door

Fleury got a second last year… and he’s not any better than Varly at this point imo. You have to give to get. Don’t be greedy.

Did you just compare a 3 time stanley cup champ, a williams jennings and a vezina award winner AND more than likely a HOF to a guy who has not won anything at all in his career?

Not a fan on trading Bratt for any return.

While a Bratt/Barzal line sounds fun, but who carries the puck? I suppose they could just play keep-away for 20 min a night.

I don’t care about what he did in Pittsburgh or in Vegas. He hasn’t been better than Varly since he won the vezina.

A few replies getting hung up on the trades here. That’s not the important thing… I was probably more looking for thoughts and criticisms around the general plan from an islanders POV. Thanks for the replies though.

Since being traded from Vegas flower has had a .908 .910 and currently a .902 playing for a very weak defensive team in Chicago and a mediocre defensive team in Minnesota.

Mean while Varly has had a .928 .911 and currently a .908 playing behind arguably one of the best defensive cores in the entire league..... Explain how these are comparable

First off they’ve been missing Pelech for a good chunk of the season which hurts. Now he’s back but Dobson is out. Secondly their overall team defense is the worst in the league cause this is the worst collection of wingers in the entire NHL.

The Islanders are tied for 10th worst in xGA/60 and have given up the 4th most high-danger chances against.
Sorokin and Varlamov are working VERY hard to keep this Isles team in playoff contention.

My apologize let me re word that, when they are healthy Varly is playing behind one of the best defensive cores in the game. But even without one key guy on their blueline the Islanders defense is still superior to both Chicago's and Minnesota's so him having better numbers is still justified.

No it really isn’t tbh. Minnesota has a legit top four defense and has better depth than NY tbh.
