How we look with Timo

Created by: dtd_tank
Team: 2023-24 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 24, 2023
Published: Jan. 24, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This assumes worst case that Vrana does not return to NHL.

In 24-25, cap ceiling goes up +$2.0M.
- Bert gets a raise but Acciari falls off the roster in favor of an ELC. Cap dollars nearly offset.
- Vrana falls off roster. +$4.1M toward cap.
- Perron falls off roster, +$4.75M.

Now we have approx. +$10.85M on top of our $6.05M space; let’s call it $16.75M in space.
- Hronek gets +$1.0M for $5.4M AAV; $15.75M in space.
- Mo gets $9.25M contract (+8.4M); $7.35M in space.
- Raymond gets $6.0M contract (+5.1M); $2.35M in space
- Berggren gets $2.8M contract (+1.9M); $0.45M in space

Using loose numbers, I think this is a feasible situation…

Detroit are not, and should not, be buyers.

Just hypothetical. I'm perfectly fine with "staying the course".

Looking at the cap situation, since someone will bring it up...

- Vrana falls off roster. +$4.1M toward cap.

Don't know how Pittsburgh could say no. Maybe we would have to move a player like Heinen for the cap.

San Jose wants all futures for Timo if they move him, not a 3C

Interesting. The return for Timo is too little,, but the cap hit on his extension is too big. You're simultaneously under- and over-valuing him.

Just sharing in case you're not super familiar with him. Over time, we've been finding that Rasmussen has much higher impact as a winger than center. Beyond that, he's been a slow grower but showing great strides. He's sat at 1LW for a period this season so he could take draws for Larkin while Larks was coming off injury and played well in that role. He has also spent time on the 2nd line and done well there.

He's more a defensive player than offensive, so just looking at counting stats could be discouraging, although it's looking like he'll have a career year offensively as he sits around 0.5 PPG today.

I’m sure Grier would love the size but I wouldn’t move a ppg player for him

Extremely doubtful that Yzerman moves the 2023 1st round pick, And i doubt very much it's for a LW like Meier. if he were to move it it would be for Bo Horvat not Timo Meier.

And Dominik Kubalik easily gets a 2nd round pick, 1.5 years left at @2,500,000 on pace for 55+ points this season. He's easily worth more than a 3rd round pick.

Just hypothetical. I'm perfectly fine with "staying the course" and not moving any picks. I prefer Meier over Horvat because we severely lack offense. Center position will improve with Copp/Kasper over the coming years. Copp is slowly coming back to form after his off-season core surgery. Horvat is having a career year and I fear he won't repeat that. Meier has been consistently better offensively over his career, and is a year younger.

Kuba was a roster casualty. 2nd/3rd/whatever. His valuation wasn't the point of this exercise.

I mean i would move to have Timo on our roster, Pretty sure Yzerman is 100% chasing Bo Horvat. But if Horvat falls through. Meier isn't a bad consolation prize.
