Makes no sense for either team

To clarify: toronto would want to add him to their team, not at the expense of a core player and San Jose would not want an older player who also needs a new contract, they'd be rebuilding

Maybe this trade could have been done a few years ago but I don't see Dubas moving Nylander with the season he's having. The aim is to make the roster deeper by adding at the deadline, not doing lateral trades.

The extra year of Nylander’s contract is pretty valuable, and it wouldn’t make sense to mess with the core roster construction in this way (this year).

San Jose would have to add. Nylander has an extra year under his contract at good value and has been the better player this year so far

if the leafs lost in round one.. do you think upper management could make a trade like this?

How would the leafs feel about trading the better player with the better contract and better term? My guess is not good.

So Nylander for Meier’s RFA rights with a $10M QO? Probably not.

I swear sharks fans would waffle for a second if asked who was better, meier or McDavid.

you guys are seriously joking right? meier is the better player! when you have Marner Matthews and Taveras to cary you you can put up great numbers! Meier has Hertl and… yea that’s it! and to be fair Meier is carying Hertl not the other way around. on TOR Meier is a 50 goal scorer!

What about karlsson. Sharks fans are on here saying he’s the best defensemen in the league.

This act from San Jose is getting old. All of a sudden some guy that’s never been a point per game player, with a career high of 35 goals would be a 50 goal scorer elsewhere.

Of course nylander is the better player

On ice value it's about the same. Both can be UFAs in summer of 2024. But Meier is gonna cost more in 23/24 than 7m Nylander so the Leafs say no for that reason.
Nylander has been playing well, and the Leafs don't want to lose his chemistry with his teammates. Taking one player out and parachuting a playing in, of equal value doesn't mean you get the same result...it usually doesn't immediately (like in less than half a season).

Karlsson is NOT close to being the best D in hockey. but he is good offensively. and Meier was PPG last year and is this year and on pace for 45 after scoring 35 last year so your comment still doesn’t have much validity.

Well, no. He wasn’t point per game last year. He was close! But he wasn’t. By the same “on pace,” logic, Nylander is on pace for 96 points and one fewer goal. Why does this logic work for one side and not the other? Nylander also scored 34 last year. With the extra year at a team friendly rate, it’s no contest as to who has more value. It’s Nylander by a mile. Better player, better contract, better term. This ones easy.

1 point away from PPG and your argueing he isn’t a PPG player? and you have to look at the metrics and Meier creates more offensive scoring chances and high danger shots than Nylander. i wouldn’t argue they are not far off from one another but if I was building a team and could pick one or the other I would go for Meier.

Point per game isn’t a range. It’s binary.

They are close. That said when the bruins fan is promoting the leafs player as the better one, maybe some sharks bias is coming in on the other side.

Regardless, if they’re close, the contract makes nylander far more valuable.

To you, to me Meier is the better player and this would be dumb for both teams. if sharks move Meier it needs to be for futures not 1 year of Nylander before he jumps ship next year.
or worse case he has a bad year and w get less in return next year and are now further behind the rebuild timeline.
