WSH TDL from DET fan perspective

Created by: dtd_tank
Team: 2022-23 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 25, 2023
Published: Jan. 25, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Spend your assets and go for it before the band breaks up!

I protected for cap space in case Carlson comes back early by getting 33% retention on Karlsson and moving Eller for Kubalik with retention. Had to do some gymnastics.

Kubalik would provide depth scoring at a similar rate to what Mantha has provided this year, but for much cheaper. Kuba has 14G and 33pts while Mantha has 9G and 24 pts.

I think that SJ proved that Karlsson needs to be the undisputed #1 and get good assignments and pp time to be the guy he is. Just don't see how pairing Karlsson and Carlson is the best use of assets for the caps, and especially wary of giving up the 24 1st. If they are going all in, which I think they should, give up what would probably be a lesser package for a much better fit in Meier

I considered that Mantha would effectively "replace" Meier from a roster perspective in SJ's lineup since they'll likely trade him too, but didn't put it together to trade Mantha for Meier instead of acquiring Karlsson.

I agree with you, that Meier would probably make more sense. However, if Meier wants 9M or more, it would be difficult to squeeze that in.

Upgrades a 4th to a 2nd and could potentially sign Lars as C depth for next year. Maybe a bit of an undersell on Kuba considering his stats this year, but I think we're actually selling high on him with this trade.

What do you expect to get for Kuba, and why?

I was going to say that's a big price to pay for CHI to retain for 4 and a half years, but that return would be well worth it for them.

Idk if WSH does that though

I don't see a reason to trade him. He's got another year on his contract at a bargain and adds secondary scoring. Unless a team offered us a significant return(overpay), no reason to move him.

I just think it benefits us to keep him instead of sell him, Eller stinks and have no desire to take that player. The 2nd + 3rd is prob close to his value, but just think at least until next deadline since he's signed for another year, rather rkeep him and sell next year If we don't resign him

I like the return, but can't see the Hawks burning one of three retention spots for this year, plus the next 4. That's a huge ask for a rebuilding team.

It's definitely a tough one, but I can't see them needing to retain on anyone other than Kane and Toews this year (if Kane will even be healthy to be traded). And those retentions will expire after this year. And then Next year it would just be Johnson likely.
I think that's way too good of a return to say no to though

This season - Domi, AA, maybe McCabe
Next season - Johnson, Dickerson, Mrazek plus any FA they would sign or other players they might acquire in a trade

It's a good return, no question. Just limits Davidson's ability to maneuver. Not sure what he values more.

I'm a fan of the Detroit trade. Not a fan of going after Karlsson though. Would rather go after cheaper options like Luke Schenn or Dmitry Kulikov
