My Meier package take it or leave it

Created by: Skyraider112
Team: 2022-23 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 25, 2023
Published: Jan. 25, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Would Meier make us better both now and in the future? Undeniably so. However, his large QO is a cause for caution. Personally I would not pull the trigger on a trade unless terms were agreed to with Meier beforehand as to an extension in the 6-7 years and 8-8.5 mil range. Sure the Sabres have the cap space now to hand out more money and term too. However, we need to be wise and continue to be prudent with cap management as we do not want to lose any of our young players due to being too generous with salaries. Forward is not our position of need, however Meier is a legit top line forward that would give us even greater scoring depth and add some much needed edge and physicality.

Here is my offer for Timo, you are all more than welcome to provide input. Any greater price on either the trade value or contract dollars and I would have to say "not worth it" for the future of the Sabres.
Trades
1.
SJS
  1. Mittelstadt, Casey
  2. Östlund, Noah
  3. Portillo, Erik [Reserve List]
  4. 2023 1st round pick (BUF)
  5. 2023 2nd round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
2023 1st is top 5 protected. 2nd round pick is the best of the 3 (which looks to be Philly's).

Grade A prospect in Ostlund
Mitts is a middle six forward, can play center but is better at wing imo. He's signed cheap and will still be RFA.
Portillo could be a good addition to the SJS pipeline, I could swap for Johnson instead but then I'd downgrade the 2nd to be Vegas' pick (as Johnson returns a 2nd round pick if he doesn't sign)
2.
CHI
  1. Hinostroza, Vinnie ($800,000 retained)
  2. Poltapov, Prokhor [Reserve List]
  3. 2024 2nd round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
Vinnie retained so that Chicago could retain further and flip him to get max value. Poltapov is a B prospect, playing against men in the KHL.

If this isn't enough for Chicago, then I'd simply roll with the D we have or try and get a cheaper option

Yeah, I think Connor Murphy is just worth more to us than he will be to another team, and retaining for 3 years isnt realistic, so we will probably just end up keeping him and are better off trading McCabe

There is no retention on Murphy... I retained on Hinostroza so that Chicago can flip him for more value

I think it would be a solid offer. But Ostlund may not be as enticing as he had been at start of season. And Portillo is a candidate to become NCAA free agent.

Maybe add Savoie in place of those two?

No I know, Im saying he won't get a return we would be happy with unless we retain on him, which probably won't happen

The 1st and 2nd round picks are what's important in this trade for Meier. Ostlund is going to be a decent top 6 player in the near future. He already has a relationship with Eklund as well. Portillo is kind of a funny case since we already have another Michigan goaltender with Strauss Mann. I guess the more the merrier smile

If I'm the sharks, I would accept.

I think if the pick in the Murphy trade was the Buffalo '23 instead of the '24, the Hawks would consider this. Really depends on what Davidson thinks of Poltapov as a prospect.

And that's a really strong offer for Meier. Sharks would have to take that I'd think

I understand now, thanks for clarifying. Not sure McCabe would want to return to Buffalo. I'm unsure about how the relationship between him and the organization ended when he left. We also need a RHD with term, which Murphy fits into. But I understand your points.

Thanks for the input man. The trade doesn't cost anything that hurts too much for the Sabres and their build, but the Sharks get some real quality pieces to help them along their path of rebuilding. Its a win-win as I see it.

Yes I think the trade value depends on how Poltapov is seen. When he was drafted there was hopes of a middle-6 goal scorer who plays with grit. Hard to gauge his development as a causal observer of his stats in the KHL. However, I would be willing to part with any similar wing prospect (Cederqvist, Kisakov etc.).

Thanks for your input!
