PLD UFA read description

Initial Creation Date: Jan. 26, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
MTL will have the ability to sign PLD as a UFA in the '24 off-season without having to sacrifice the future or assets they've invested significant time development into.
Bringing in PLD will give MTL a whole new top 6 look and a plethora of options on the top 6 with the ability to interchange Dach and PLD or Slavs, Cole, Anderson depending on the situation.

I have the cap set for 85.5M that season and I think that's being very conservative as it could very well be much higher around 87M.

I also see young guns such as Roy, Farrel, Kidney, Mailloux and Beck being on the team by then either as freshmen or rookies.

Buyouts Explanation:
Armia I believe will be bought out this summer ('23) - nobody will take on his contract for his performance so lets get the immediate savings NOW while the cap is low.
Dvorak and Gally performances look to be in serious decline moving forward and they'll be made expendable with the kids knocking on the door. By the summer of '24, the immediate savings would be welcome as the cap starts to rise more on average each year.

Armia (buyout summer '23) - Overall Savings 2.86M
Dvorak (buyout summer '24) - Overall Savings 1.91M
Gallagher (buyout summer '24) - Overall savings 6.5M

Total buyout savings (spread across 7 years) = over 11M

Even with 11M for PLD + 7.5M for Cole = still 20M under the cap

I've put Matheson, Savard and Evans on LTIR (because I think they'll be traded by then).
but IF they are not, they're combined 9.5 M in cap hit, still leaves us with ~12M Cap Cushion.

This 20M in cap space will be needed in '25 to sign the following RFA's

Guhle - should be signed for 6.5 (8 years)
Mailloux - 950K (entry level)

Slafkovsky - 3.5M (bridge)
Farrell - 1.75 (bridge)
Beck - 2.5 (bridge)
Heineman - (950k slide rule)
Kidney (950k slide rule)
Roy (950k slide rule)

This is an insane premise. No way PLD signs for 1 year in the offseason. Habs will have to trade for his rights or lose their chance. I am a diehard Habs supporter but this premise that all Habs fans are spouting is total nonsense.

Can you name 1 player in the last 10 years who has signed 2 1-year deals in a row if he had any other option? The risk he would be taking with his career and future earnings does not justify the return he will get.

His rights will be traded in the offseason to a team that will sign him to a long term extension for 8M or more per season.

I still think there’s a spot here where he resigns in Winnipeg for 3 years 8.5 to 9.5 and then traded in two years, when jets window is closed or closing and possibly Montreal at that point or somewhere else then goes 8x at 27 years old

One of probably very few, who went for short term contracts instead of signing long term was Trouba of the Jets. He managed it so, the Jets had control of him for just for one season. Jets made the trade to the Rangers.....Trouba signed long term and Jets got a nice return for a guy that going to walk as UFA. Matthew Tkachuk did the same thing. Nice return to Calgary, Huberneau, Weager and a 1st thought Flames made the mistake of signing Hubeneau to an outrageously high $$$ and maximum term which ends when he is 38.
We';ll see if PLD does forgo a guaranteed long term contract this summer, or will go the one year contract so he can be a UFA in the summer of 2024.

Fair enough. I can see him re-signing in Winnipeg as well on a shorter deal!

Did Trouba or Tkachuk do it twice though? PLD did it this past offseason already...

Doesn't mean it can't be done.
PLD controls the shots here - as an RFA.
to say it's unthinkable, unimaginable or any thing that "CAN"T" realistically happen is what is crazy here.

Jet's have him now and are firmly intrenched in a playoff position with "cup contender" status.
They're simply NOT going to move him at the TDL.
in the offseason, they ONLY way they can trade his rights is to a team that will be allowed to have contract talks with him beforehand - that list of teams WILL definitely include the HABS.
no matter which way you slice it PLD is in complete control in all scenarios.
So long story short I can absolutely see this playing out.

Tkachuk did sign a 3 year RFA after his ELC which is not unusual....though it did give just on more year as RFA till UFA. Yeah, PLD is on that route.
Trouba haad at two RFA contracts with the Jets and was about to start a third, till he got traded.
Yeah it's a "brave" thing for a player to do, forego long term security after his ELC with and take short term contracts and hope to hit UFA status as a better, healthy player.

Yes... It can happen. But it's about as likely as someone eating a bat and causing a global pandemic...
