Leafs 3 moves TDL

Created by: MitchJr
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 23, 2023
Published: Jan. 26, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leafs need 3 pieces imo:
2LW - Tarasenko should flourish playing with elite players & offers another legit goal scoring threat
3/4C - need some grit / playoff chops in bottom 6
RHD - I like Holl (only leaving b/c of cap crunch) but mayfield fills similar role with more physical play. Too easy to play in Leafs D zone sometimes and Bolts / Bruins are both heavy, forecheck teams

Take the fifth out. If I have to watch Justin Holl play I’m not giving up a fifth lol.

5th is peanuts, so 🤷. Holl is not terrible and is a very effective 3rd pairing D, just feel we need at least another D that can make life difficult for opposing forwards. Right now it’s just Gio (who is 39) and to a lesser extent Lilligren & Sandin. Reilly, & Brodie use positioning, sticks & skating which is fine but Tampa & Boston are heavy teams

No chance he gets more than that imo, but time will tell

I like Holl, but he is soft and our D lack’s physicality, especially since Muzz is out. He’s the obvious one to go - Mayfiekd is is similar to Holl imo, but much more physical. Need to make life a bit more uncomfortable for Tampa and Boston forwards

Mayfield averages 4.71 hits per 60 whole Holl averages 5.4

That is overpaying with a useful asset (1st Rd pick) for someone who might not even be an upgrade

Agree to disagree; a lot of nhl data is questionable and #hits is at top of list . Just my opinion, but no chance Holl is more physical than Mayfield; that’s based on watching Holl hundreds of games and Mayfield a half dozen. Picks are over rated - time to compete is now

If physicality is the real concern why aren't you targeting Schenn? Probably cheaper

Schenn is not at Holl’s level in terms mobility, he can’t keep up with Leafs speed. Mayfield can imo. If 1st is too much, maybe downgrade to 2nd is an option.
I don’t want Dubas to avoid making trades that can help us win now, because cost (picks, prospects) is too high. He needs to be smart but pay the price required to upgrade the team.

It's just that of you're looking for physicality... I don't know if Mayfield is your guy. Also how much does upgrading your 3rd pairing defenseman really do?

Gio is looking tired to me and there is no way he can handle first pairing minutes or the speed of the players.

First, I’m also upgrading the forwards. Who knows the pairings, maybe Mayfield plays top 4 role with Gio. Sandin / Lili are playing well but young so maybe they are better suited for 3rd pair in playoffs.
Holl’s season has been erratic - started out absolutely brutal; to his credit he improved and played really well through Nov/Dec but to my eyes he’s reverting back to bad habits - poor decisions, soft on the puck. He’s the weakest link on D corps (& Timmins is more of a long term project) and in our division, you can’t afford weak links.

To be fair, a lot of players are looking tired right now. But Gio played great when Reilly & Brodie were out - I have no doubt he’s still got gas in the tank. Hedman is slow but still effective.
The pairs are not set in stone but I like Brodie / Gio combo
