Fair offer for Hughes, actually an overpay, but he’s not going anywhere

Not sure why the Leafs would target Hughes when Rielly is a similar style player. Canucks wouldn’t retain for that long either. Both teams decline

Leafs aren't trading a NHL Dman (at 1.4m) Sandin and future one (hopefully) Niemela, and two firsts , and Knies and Robertson for 6m Hughes.

That St Louis trade is awful for the Leafs. Barbashov isn't that special, and though ROR could be be half a season, to give a first, second and Minten is extremely high.

I think Vancouver is in a situation where nobody is untouchable because almost everyone will ask to leave. Already rumours Peterson's agent has said he won't resign, I think if Alvin in smart he trades everyone now, tried to get Bedard and start from scratch, just keep the guys he brought in as his vets.

Reilly hasn't been playing great and if the leafs can get Hughes thats 5 years of Hughes #1 and Reilly #3 with Brodie as #2 succeeded by Lili in a few years. It essentially sets their D for the foreseeable future and with Schenn/Brodie/Lili you have D first guys down the right so no harm in offensive guys on the left.

As others in the comments say, Blues would be crazy to turn that down.

Why? It's easily fair value for Hughes you are getting likes two top 4 D and two top 6 forwards potentially 2/3 future all-star and two firsts.

I think if Dubas feels his job is on the line these deals make sense. Cause if it works who cares. If it doesn't you still have a top 10 NHL D in Hughes for 4 more years at a reasonable price. Schenn could resign low, O'Reilly is from Toronto and could resign at 7x3.5M.

There are options to make this work for the next 3-5 years.

But fundamentally you can't argue the team after these trades is better than before for this season and arguably one of the best in the least few years.

“If Alvin is smart” is where your point falls apart. They are petrified of a rebuild and are attempting to retool. Hughes is staying

Because Hughes is and will be the best player in this deal, there is no reason to trade Hughes, rather find a top 4 d in another trade

One person said that and they aren’t a Blues fan so I would take that comment with a large grain of salt.

Blues would rather have less more bauble peices then a bunch of junk plus a first 3 years from now
23 first and a 3rd for ROR, 23 2nd and a 3rd for barby
