Noooooo absolutely not. Mercer should not be anywhere near a Meier trade. And you can't just disappear Smith to the shadow realm it doesn't work like that.

Mercer shouldn't be anywhere near the Meier (or the weird Horvat) talks. And definitely don't need both.

Why? It makes sense because Mercer would ultimately be the cap hit that made things not work. Obviously would rather have him than Holtz but cap wise if it allowed both Meier and Horvat? Why would you not prefer that configuration?

Also, Smith, who cares?? Include him in the San Jose trade as a throw in, or pay someone a fourth or fifth pick to take him. He doesn't have any trade protections. It absolutely works like that.

Bratt @ 8 is what I have, no way Horvat hits 8.5 mil sorry, and Meier is getting 8.5 TOPS but in this situation takes a slight cut to play for a contender and with his fellow swiss

Wanna bet on Horvat, He was already offered $7,500,000 and laugh at Vancouver. Maybe he takes $8,000,000 but it still puts you over the cap.

Mercer should not be the cap casualty. Let Yegor walk, let the whole fourth line walk, but Mercer should be kept around as long as possible.

Smith is better that Okhotiuk.

And I just noticed Stillman on the roster. I'll eat my shoe if he makes the team next year.

Who? Gravy probably the most egregious, if he doesn't sign that's fine, find some comparable on a short term deal. I think people are WAAAY over estimating Horvat's next deal. I guess we shall see.

This was just for fun obviously but honestly it isn't as crazy as some other responses (not yours) are making it sound.

When you can't afford their cap. All 3 big signing are pretty light and you're already up against it with a 21-man roster.

I know that this is just for fun but I agree with MellowK that they definitely don't need both Meier and Horvat-no need to sign another C just to play him wing, nonetheless.

The age difference and production between Meier and Bratt are pretty negligible, so I would be surprised if Meier only gets a 56m total contract with Bratt getting 64m, or them handing Bratt 64m if they got Meier at 54m. If Meier is getting 7 years, I would expect him to have a higher AAV than Bratt, so something like 8.5mx7 = 59.5m especially since Meier averages more goals than Bratt.

Ryan Graves probably needs at least 5 years in term or 4 with a significantly higher cap hit or he might as well test free agency.

He does?? I didn't see that:

The extra 500k is nothing to play for a competitor in this sense, it's far from that unusual.

The odds that Mercer is available is about the same as Holtz. Neither likely unless Meier is signing well below market.

Horvat at 500k-1 million, Meier at 1 more year and 500k, Bratt 500k, Sharangovich 500k

Obviously you prefer Mercer to Sharangovich but the money doesn't make sense in that scenario. You think it is that crazy to take Meier over Mercer?

Whatever Smith's marginal value over Okhotiuk is insignificant. Same with Stillman. OK, just replace him with Bastian. Better than letting your whole "fourth line walk"...

Gotta think Holtz is absolutely on the table in a Meier trade

Again we'll just have to agree to disagree on Horvat. Meier sure one more year that was my bad, and I get the extra 500k but again, how many teams can give him that vs how many teams are competitors? Bratt I think 8 is perfectly reasonable. Sharangovich I don't think has a ton of leverage after the numbers he is putting up this season.

I hear you, but I don't think it's as cut and dry as that either.

100% that's the logical way of looking at it, but the problem is you run into serious cap issues and start cutting into your depth in devastating ways. Obviously Mercer >>>> Holtz + Sharangovich, but the latter are much easier on the wallet. And the overall picture, in my opinion, beats the alternative scenario!

I meant to give Meier 8 years. I don't know what you mean by not having a need. Each of those guys compliments their respective lines in spectacular fashion. I don't know why you would prefer the alternative situation where say we have mercer but not Horvat... Unless it is cap reasons which fine, but I don't think the signings are THAT crazy.

Probably Graves doesn't accept, I will grant you that. And we can't go any further because even with extensions for Luke and Nemec, we'll need the catch (plus Holtz). But OK, you find someone else, a slightly lesser veteran guy to hold the ship, even if the next year or two the defense suffers a bit, we'd be making up for it, and then, when Nemec and L Hughes hit their stride, and all of these guys are firing on all cylinders???

I was just agreeing with MellowK about not having both Meier and Horvat, not about keeping Mercer. What I mean about not needing Horvat is that having Meier and Palat on the left side is enough. They don't need a 7.5m C playing on the wing, it's just a luxury, when they are forcing a capable player down and one that could easily come back to bite them by 1) having complications with signing Holtz, Nemec, and L Hughes in the future and 2) Horvat, Meier, and/or Palat severely underperforming due to overcrowding (lack of ice-time or unsuitable deployment).

Now if you want Horvat for his faceoff ability to be on Hughes wing, then might as well pursue him, keep Mercer and pass on Meier.
