A trade that helps both sides

Created by: Black61
Team: 2022-23 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 28, 2023
Published: Jan. 28, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Montreal right now needs to free up a few contract spots (its the reason why they havent claimed guys despite having to resort to calling beck up from junior). They have farrell Struble and Tuch coming after the ncaa season is over. With all the injuries and LTIR the habs effectively dont have a cap anymore.

New Jersey could use more cap flexibility for the deadline. With Bernier on LTIR they will be dippig into the Pool instead of accumulating cap.
Trades
MTL
  1. Johnsson, Andreas
Additional Details:
Would free up a contract spot for montreal and add a usable body.

Side note: the habs would probably want a ahl forward signed to a ahl deal as well. they are running out of bodies.
NJD
  1. Byron, Paul
  2. Fairbrother, Gianni
Additional Details:
Byron is done this season (and probably for his career tbh) so he stays on ltir which adds to the pool and Johnsson comes off.

Fairbrother is also done for the year.

I'd be fine with this if it's just a matter of cap room

Why does Montreal need to free up a contract spot exactly? We are sitting at 47 of 50 and are expected to trade some for futures (Monahan,Dadonov, Drouin). Also we have Byron's expiring after the season so that frees up an additional spot.

Depending on the trades they will likely need to take contracts back on top of the return they get due to the cap and other teams contract constraints.

Remember last year lehkonen out but barron in

Toffoli out but pitlick in

Kulak out but lagesson in.

The team needs the extra slot to ensure they arent in a position where they either cant make a trade or sign one of their ncaa guys due to not having enough spots

If we made simlirar move to the three trades you are referring to above still means we still have 47 contracts at the end and 3 free contract spots. Unless they do 1 out 2 in (which isn't normally done) then after the deadline we would have the same number of contracts or less.

Rakel hagel eichel are some examples from last tdl of the team selling the best player ending up with more contracts it does happen.

You are also ignoring the exempt contracts. Mesar kidney roy and mailloux. The junior season ends before the nhl one does. Mesar is on kitchener who are in 8th place in their conference. His season could be done well before the nhl or ahls and we would need a contract to bring him back up.

Farrell+ struble+ mesar back up =50. So before we even consider tuch, davidson, dobes. Oh and only 3 signed nhl goalies so were 2 injuires away from not having the ability to ice a roster

Theres a reason why it has been said multiple times on the habs broadcasts thats why they werent claiming people despite all the injuries.

I know it happens, I never said it didn't. What I said was it doesn't normally happen.

I wasn't ignoring their exempt contracts, I just assumed they were exempt until next season started, that's on me for not understanding how they work.

I don't think Davidson, Struble or Tuch get signed. Dobes and Vrbetic might (although one or both may sign an AHL level contract to end this year and an NHL contract in the summer.

I know we aren't claiming guys cause of the limit but we also don't have to take back Johnsson since Byron is expiring and LTIRetired and Fairbrother can be moved with Byron for a mid/late pick to free up 2 contract spots

They comfirmed a few months ago they are signing struble.

Im sorry but it seems the nuance of this is going over your head
