Description
Ok, I know that the leafs getting Meier isn't likely, but it's isn't completly out of the question either, so this is what I think it would look like if it happened.

Kerfoot needs to be in the trade for salary reasons, or at least Engvall, unless you somehow get double retention with a 3rd team.

People who think the leafs will get him without giving up someone like Knies or Sandin are kidding themselves. SJS will want a major piece coming back. A first round pick being included is also a must (probably has to be 2023, but maybe 2024 would work).

The rest of the assets in this trade were included for a few reasons, partly to account for Bonino being thrown in, and partly just to put Toronto over the top of any other any other teams wanting Meier.

I think IF Toronto acquires Meier, it will look something like this. Let me know your thoughts though.
Trades
TOR
  1. Bonino, Nick
  2. Meier, Timo ($3,000,000 retained)
SJS
  1. Abruzzese, Nick
  2. Kerfoot, Alexander
  3. Knies, Matthew [Reserve List]
  4. 2023 1st round pick (TOR)
  5. 2023 3rd round pick (OTT)
  6. 2024 2nd round pick (TOR)

Fairish trade and very reasonable logic. Thumbs up on this one

Still think a lot of teams can beat this, but who knows if they will.

Yah thanks, I wanted to try and make it as fair as I could for SJS.

It’s possible other teams could beat it, I don’t know.

You said "The rest of the assets in this trade were included for a few reasons, partly to account for Bonino being thrown in, and partly just to put Toronto over the top of any other any other teams wanting Meier."

I don't think the Leafs will try to outbid anyone. If they make a Meier offer it will likely be a lowball or something they think is fair. If they did though I think this would do it, and the only team that would probably bother to outbid them is probably NJ, but they might want to practice patience considering the Leafs probably won't resign him and there are also other guys available.

I wonder though if the Leafs would rather get a defender as a throw in (if SJ has a physical one that is cheap) over Bonino or one from a different team.

I see what you're saying, but the leafs are all in and they will probably have a similar deadline approach to the 2021 deadline if I had to guess (ie, just trying to get the players they want and not worrying about the price). Not saying they'll get Meier for sure or anything but I'm guessing they'll be less worried about how much players cost this year (just a guess though).

Quite possible, personally I think a depth forward like Bonino is a better idea. They have more than enough defensive depth.

Maybe, they will go all in, but I can't imagine Dubas saying he won't trade Knies and won't trade the 2023 1st for a rental and then turn around and trade for Meier (although not technically a rental) unless that's all he's giving up for Meier and Bonino in terms of futures. Basically, a case where giving up Knies and/or the 1st would be too good to pass on.

Knies and a 1st plus is going to be in the running. i could see Grier holding this and then accepting if NJ or Buffalo does not step up

I know what you're saying, but Meier is not rental and is more valuable than any rental on the market. I think Dubas is bluffing if he says he's not trading the 2023 first though, I think he'll trade it.

Meier isn't a rental but the approach for the Leafs would probably be to treat him as one, guess it really depends on how much would be expected for them to be able to recuperate if they traded him at the draft or after.

I do think Dubas might be bluffing about the 1st and maybe even Knies but that would probably only be to gain some sort of leverage in trade negotiations.

Maybe if they are just giving up Knies+2023 1st + a 2024 3rd+Kerfoot for Meier and Bonino, that would be advantageous enough.

That’s true as they can’t really resign him unless they make another trade.

Yah, I can’t see Dubas being conservative at the deadline with his job on the line. Almost for sure he makes a splash.

If they could do that that would be nice

Can you mention how keeping him beyond this season would work?

I like him, don't get me wrong.
I want to Matthews and Nylander beyond there current deals.

Yah that’s definitely the main problem with acquiring him. I imagine trading or LTIRing Muzzin and Murray and not resigning Kerfoot and Engvall should be enough to keep him at like 9 mil. Of course, then you probably can’t keep Nylander which is unfortunate.
