Description

There are rumblings that Van plans on Buying out Garland at the end of the year. If they do, it would cost an average of 1,530,555 against the cap for the next 6 years. It might make more sense for them to trade him at the deadline with 50% retention so that they only have to pay 2,475,000 for 3 years. They save money in the long run and recoup assets. Because it's "common knowledge" that Vancouver wants to buy him out, his value would slightly decrease. Dubas has been scouting the Canucks a lot over the last two weeks.

Note: This isn't necessarily what I think the best use of the Deadline is, but it is definitely an option.

Garland is not the one that would be bought out. Buyout rumours refer to OEL exclusively.

Look at the figures again. The retention plan works out MUCH worse for the Canucks: (1) 100% of the retention is paid in 2024-2026 dollars, whereas 50% of the buyout is paid in 2027-2029 dollars; (2) on an overall basis, the buyout only costs more than retention when you finally get to the last year; and (3) the majority of the retention occurs at the worst time, when the cap ceiling is the lowest.
